Moses RICE Capt. was born on 27 October 1694 in Sudbury, Middlesex, MA. He died on 11 June 1755 at the age of 60 in Charlemont, Franklin, MA. The Rice Family, Ward, 1858, p. 17 - Also, pp. 50-51 M. at Sudbury, 1719, removed to Worcester about 1722, and opened a public house on the site of one afterwards kept by Capt. Ephraim Mower, and on which was subsequently erected the "United States Hotel." He was posted at Rutland on garrison duty, with others from Worcester, 1724, under the command of Capt. Samuel Wright of Rutland. Commanded a company of cavalry while residing at Worcester, and removed to Rutland, where he appeared of record 1742. At a town meeting there on the 9th of May in that year, Eleazer Ball, Capt. Moses Rice and Daniel Estabrook were chosen to provide for the ordination of Mr. Joseph Buckminster in that town on the 15th of Sept. following. He conveyed to James Heaton of Rutland, who m. his dau., "a saw mill at Longmeadow Falls" in that town on the 13th of April 1737; he was then of Worcester, with the title of captain. He purchased 2200 acres of land in the township of Charlemont, April 23, 1743, and removed to that place; the time we do not learn. He is said to have been its first town clerk; but as that township was not incorporated till 1765, ten years after his death, it is not unlikely he was the Proprietors' Clerk. Being a frontier settlement it was exposed during the French and Indian wars, and suffered by the ravages of the enemy. June 11, 1755, while Capt. Rice was in his field ploughing among corn, the Indians, lying in ambush, shot him, and at the same time shot and killed outright, Phineas Arms, aged 24, who was at work in the field at that time. The horse at the plough, being frightened, started suddenly and threw off his rider, Asa Rice, a gr. son of Capt. Moses, aged about 8, whom the Indians caught up and carried to Canada. Capt. Rice being sorely wounded, and unable to walk, was taken some distance into the adjoining woods, where he was tomahawked and scalped.; in the 61st year of his age, and the chief man of the township for counsel in peace and in war. Prominent man in three towns, two of them old settlements, he was looked upon as the head and father of that infant plantation, of which he was the chief promoter, and one of its first settlers.
