In February 1847 the pioneers, as they were called, l eft the little settlement called Winter Quarters, for the great trackless, unknown country, called vaguely "the West" . How the people left Nauvoo in the depths of winter, crossing the river on the ice in the month of February; how, as soon as their leaders were once away, before the last ones had left town, great bonfires of valuables and furniture were heaped up to the winter sky by the fierce; mobbers now in posession of the beautiful city; how scenes of cruelty and rapine followed their every movement in the doomed city; and how, wandering wearily and heavily across the muddy bottoms, reaching at length a spot, where, worn out with despair and fatigue, their leader halted them, and decided to remain there all winter to rest and recuperate, building houses and forts, cutting the wild luxuriant prairie grass, settling down like a sudden swarm of bees on a lone an d desolate tree, arranging schools and courts, divine servi ces, and even gay festivities -- all these things are matters of history and can be read by anyone desiring to know them for himself. Nahum found measures to accompany this grand "Move" and arriving at the halting place, soon built a comportableh ouse for his family. It was there that Brigham Young, already with a number of wives, married with little courting, the eldest girl of Nahum, Mary Jane, and also with no courting whatever, the second girl, Lucy. As before stated, the pioneers came out in 1847. Th e next summer or spring, as President Young had returned for more of the Saints, he asked to take Lucy to the west. She was allowed to go. The year 1850 saw Nahum being assisted some by the church, with his family, also one or two others, poor and homeless, who seemed thrown on his kindness, enroute to the valley. Always charitable hewas generally burdened with someone or two, halt, sick or poor, who gladly accepted the quiet unostentatious charity of the family.

Arriving in Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1848, he w as advised by President Young to spend the winter in a little town, or rather the nucleus of a town, a few miles north of the city. Accordingly, to Farmington went Naham and f amily, Mary and Lucy, of course, remaining in their husband 's family in Salt Lake City. Asa, the second son, had resolved to get a little schooling for himself, if possible. After obtaining permission, he sought and obtained labor to get means for a winter's schooling in the city. It was in the winter of 1851. Nahum had never fully recovered from the terrible kindness of his neighbor's coffee. One day, suddenly, and without the least warning, the same terrible cramps, deepening into terrible agony, that had attacked him in Navoo, came upon his weakened frame . Word was at once sent to Asa, also to Mary and Lucy, he requesting them to ask the President to come up once more to bid him goodby. Aye! Good-by! He looked on his humble, but secure and moderately comfortable cabin, his wife within the sheltering arms of peace and unity as they existed among the Saints; his children, two of them married to one of the grandest and best men ever sent to earth; his sons, sober, steady and at work for the common family welfare; all this came up before him, and he exclaimed in his heart, "My prayers have been answered. Lo, mine eyes have seen thy salvation . Lord, now let thy servant depart in peace, according t o thy word." Ir was even so. He told them at the noon hour of that day, "Tomorrow at 12 o'clock I shall die. But oh, how m y soul longs to see the face and clasp the hand of that nob le prophet-leader Brigham young. Do you think he will be here in time?" There were no telegraph lines, not even mail in those days, and time went by on slow-moving stead Parents: Simeon BIGELOW and Sarah FOSTER.

The Bigelows came to Marl. between 1690 and 1700 from Watertown. Thisfamily was early in the country, and may be traced to a remote period inEngland, even to the reign of Henry III, when the name was writtenBAGULEY, and was derived from the place where they dwelt. Richard atthat was lord of BAGULEY, and his descendants took the name of the place.In the reign of Henry VII, Ralph de Baguley was lord of Ollerton Hall andd. 1540, leaving Randall and Nicholas. Randall d. 1556, and his sons,Philip and Robert, divided his estate. Robert died 1582, leaving Randalland John, both of whom moved to Suffolk. Randall d. 1626, leaving twosons, Francis and John. Francis d. 1657, and gave by will a portion ofhis property to his brother John, then in New England.

John BAGULEY, or BIGELOW, as the name is now written, was baptized inEngland, Feb. 16, 1617; he came to Watertown early, where he m. Oct. 30,1642, Mary Warren, also b. in England. She d. Oct. 19, 1691, and he m.1694, Sarah Bemis. He d. July 14, 1703, aged 86. He was the ancestor ofthe numerous families of Bigelows in New England. He had 12 children - 6sons and 6 daus. The name is variously written in the Watertown records-- BIGULAH, BIGLO, and BIGLOW.
