Rapalje (Rapareilliet, Raparlié, Rapalyea, Raplee, etc.)

For documentation of Joris (Georges) Rapalje's origin and marriage see George E. McCracken, “Joris Janzsen Rapalje of Valenciennes and Catelyntje Jeronimus Trico of Pry,” The American Genealogist 48(1972):118-20; George O. Zabriskie's article in de Halve Maen, cited above; and Hugh T. Law, How to Trace Your Ancestors to Europe (1987), pp. 83-87. As both McCracken and Zabriskie acknowledge, it was Law who actually discovered the key marriage and baptismal records, in 1964. All of these authors emphasize that earlier accounts of the Rapalje ancestry are unreliable. It should also be noted that the form “de Rapalje” which appears in a few New York records is not found in any European documents of the family.

Recently much new information has come to light on Catalina (Trico) Rapalje's family connections: see Dorothy Koenig and Pim Nieuwenhuis, “Catalina Trico from Namur (1605-1689) and Her Nephew, Arnoldus de la Grange,” New Netherland Connections [NNC] 1(1996):3:55-63, and “Further Information About Catalina Trico,” NNC 1:4:89-93. The latter article reveals the name of Catalina's mother, Michele Sauvagie (p. 92) and also supports Law's argument that Catalina's birthplace of “Pry,” once misread as Paris, was Prisches, Hainaut (now in France), near Valenciennes.

On the early descendants of this couple see George E. McCracken, “Catelyntje Trico Rapalje,” The American Genealogist 35(1959):193-200. Some lines are traced further in James Riker's Annals of Newtown (1852) and other works but there is no overall, generally-available published genealogy of the family.

Joris = George The name of Joris appears as Georges, illegitimate son of Jean on the baptismal record. It was not unusual for Walloon and Huguenot parents to take their children to Roman Catholic priests to be baptised in the absence of Protestant clergy or to escape persecution. Similarly, it was not uncommon for the priests to refuse to recognize the validity of Protestant marriages, recording the children of such marriages as "illegitimate".

From "Family Tree Maker" World Family Tree Vol 3, pre-1600 to present
Joris (George) Jansen Rapalie, the father of Sarah, and the common ancestor of the Rapalies of this country, is said by some writers to be a proscribed Huguenot, from Rochelle in in France, and emigrant in 1623 in the ship "Unity" with Catalyntie Trico, whom he probably married before the voyage (although the ceremony may have been performed after his arrival, having no date of the same). appears to have resided for three years, until 1626 in Albany, then removed to New Amsterdam, where he remained for more than 22 years (occupying and owning a house and ot on the north side of present Pearl Street (lower Manhattan-East Side near Wall Street), and butting against the south wall of the fort, for which he received a patent on the 18 of March, 1647, and until after the birth of his youngest child in 1650. According to Riker's work "NEWTOWN", Joris Rapalie sold his house and lot on 22 June 1654 to Hendrick Henderson, a drummer for 800 Guilders. During at least a period of this time he kept a tavern or tap-house, as then styled, his name appearing as late as March 16, 1648, on the records in the book of the burgomasters court of said city, among the inn keepers and tapsters, inhabitants who promised to observe the proclamation of Gov. Stuyvesant for March 10, 1648, in relation to the regulation of such houses. He probably removed to his Long Island Farm as early as 1655, which he probably partially cultivated previously. for April 13th of that year he was appointed one of the magistrates of Brooklyn, in the place of Peter Cornellisse. Rapalie figured frequently in numerous suits on the records of the burgomaster's and schepen's court of New Amsterdam up to 1656. on the 28th of April, of which year a return was made in a suit of Cornelia Schellinger against "Jorsey Rapalje" of Rapalje's having departed beyond the jurisdiction of the court, and the same return was made on the 25th of the following November, in a suit of Jacob Schellinger against "Cataly Jorsey", Rapalje's wife.
On the 16th of June, 1637, Rapalie bought a track of land of the Indians, "Kakapeynor, and Pewichaas", called "Rinnegakonck" situate "on Long Island, south of the island of Manhattans, extending from a certain Kil till into the woods south and eastward to certain Kipplebush (swamp), to a place where the waters rund over the stones" On the 17th of June 1643, his indian purchase was patented to him by the governor,m and is described "as a piece of land called Rinnegakonck

My information is that the Rapalje family originated in Valenciennes, France. The original name was Raparlier. It was changed to Rapalje by a phonetic rendering by the Dutch. Joris was born in Valenciennes in 1605. He was 19 and his bride, Catherine (Catalynje) Tricot (variously Tricaud or Trico) was 18 when they set out for America. They (like many Huguenots) emigrated first to Holland (hence the name change) and then to New Netherland. They had ten children, of whom the youngest Daniel was born in Brooklyn on Dec.29,1650. He married Sarah Klock. He is my ancestor. One of his descendants, Daniel, is credited as being the first citizen of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. I hope this information is helpfu
From Broderbund's Family Tree Maker WFT:1
Joris Jansen De Rapalje, a descendent of very prominent French family, emigrated with his wife- Catalina Trico de Rapalje to New Netherland, one of the first West India Company Colonies, iNew Yorke ship UNITY IN 1623. They are the only ones known today, that were among the founders of Fort Orange in 1623. Fort Orange (Albany) was the first permanent settlement in New Netherland; colonized by some 16 families of French Huguenots, descendents of Protestant refugees from France and Belgium. Perhaps 14 other family settled at Manhattan and Long Island (New Amsterdam). The Rapaljes removed to New Amsterdam in 1626, had house and lot on Pearl Street, Breucklen, in 1647, where he kept a tavern. He purchased with "some merchandise" 335 acres at Wallabout or Walloon's Bay, Long Island from the Indians on 16 June 1637; this confirmed by deed from Governor Kieft -1643. This famous Rapalje farm, was called "Rinnegackonck", because it was located at a stream named such by the Indians. It was long maintained by tradition and historians that this farm, at one time being the location of the U.S. Marine Hospital, was the first purchase of land by Europeans on Long Island or at least Brooklyn. Joris Rapalje was a member of the "Famous Board of Twelve Men" -1641- until abolished in 1642; this board was the first board of government in New York and New Jersey (New Netherland). He also served as the Schepen or Magistrate of Breucklen -1656-1660.
Catalina Trico, born in Paris, was described as a most vigorous and energetic woman, who was very well educated. She once was described as, "an old Walloon from Valenciennes, seventy years old." "She is worldly minded, and has some 150 progeny, but never the less lives alone, tending a little garden." She died some teNew Yorkears later; it is wondered how many grandchildren she had then? Catalina is the mother of Sara, the first European female child born in New Netherlands -1625, Brooklyn, for which a town lot was given to commemorate, which is today near the Wallabout in Brooklyn. The original family record has been preserved for decades in the Library of the New York Historical Society. Catalina Trico was the only eye witness participant of the early New Netherlands to provide the history and give accurate testimony; her facts being regarded as accurate for historical purposes. [Very lengthy accounts may be studied by researching the book: THE ANCESTRY OF LEANDER HOWARD CRALL; N.Y LIBRARY] by B.J. Benefiel - 10th Generation Great-Grandson
RELATIONSHIP: Film No. 1035615.8, "Howell Family", pp. 335-337. In 1623, he and his future wife Catalyntie Trico, emigrated to New Amsterdam with the first Dutch settlers. They sailed under charter of the Dutch West India Company, in the ship "Unity", commanded by Arien Joris
In a deposition by Catalyntie, she said that as soon as the "Unity" arrived at "Mannatans", now called New York, two families and six men were sent to "Harford River", two families and six men to Delaware River, eight men were left at New York, and the rest of the passengers stayed with the ship as far as Albany, then called "Fort Orange."
Bans were posted in the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church 13 January 1624 for a marriage between Joris "from Valenciennes boart-worker age 19 residing on ' Vaelepadt and Catherine Trico from pris in Walslant accompanied by Mary Fla(m)engh her sister residing in the Flask age 18 years." It is believed that "boartworker" means weaver of a certain kind of cloth. After their marriage, Joris and Catalylntie remained in Albany, the center of the New Netherlands fur trade. Their daughter, Sarah, was born in 1625, and was the first white child of European parentage born in New Netherlands, which then covered the present states of New York, New Jersey, and part of Connecticut.
In 1626, the Rapalje family moved to New Amsterdam, now New York. They remained there for 22 years, owning and occupying a house on the north side of the present Pearl Street, abutting against the fort. They remained there until after the birth of their youngest child in 1650.
In August 1641, Joris was one of the famous Council of Twelve Men representing Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Pavonia, elected to confer with Governor Kieft to suggest means to punish the Indians for a murder they had committed.
Joris was an innkeeper, a farmer, and a seaman during his 22 years in Albany. He was called a "chief boatswain" in Colonial records of 1647. His name appears as late as 16 March 1648 on records of persons who kept taverns or taphouses. Up until 1656, he figures frequently in court records of numerous suits.
In about 1655, Joris and Catalyntie removed to a tract of land on Long Island, south of the Island of Manhattans in the Walleboght or Wallabout Cove (now Brooklyn). He had purchased the land, called "Rinnegacknock" from the Indians on 16 June 1637, and received a patent for it from Governor Kieft on 17 June 1643. His farm of about 335 acres was described as "on Long Island, extending from a certain 'kripplebush' (swamp) to a place where the water runs over the stones". His woodlot was on a hill where Fort Greene Park now is located, and his meadowland on the level City Park. A creek ran through his property and emptied into Wallabout Bay. It is said that when a child, Sarah was ferried in a tub between Governor's Island and Brooklyn.
Joris was a magistrate of Brooklyn in 1655, 56, 57, and 1660. He was elected to the office of deacon in the Reformed Dutch Church there in 1661. He died at an election of church officers, 21 Feb., 1663.

Joris, living in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1623, with his prospective bride, Catalina Trico, had been recruited with a number of other families, probably mostly Walloon s, to go as colonists for the West India Company's venture in America. Their acceptance was subject to their being married before the ship's departure. To meet this requirement necessitated the publication of the intent to marry and the actual marriage, a process which then usually required at least 3 weeks. The banns for Joris and Catalina were published on Saturday, January 11, 1624, and their marriage took place on Sunday, anuary 21, 1624 at the Walloon Church in Amsterdam. Joris was a weaver or textile worker, and Catalina was probably born in Pry, Belgium, not too far from Valencientes. Four days later, on January
25, 1624, the couple sailed on the Unity, Adrian Foriszen Tienpont, skipper. Few of their fellow passengers are known by name; though Sebastian Janszen Krol, John Monfoort and his wife, Jacqueline Moreau, and about a dozen other families with marriageable daughters and sons , with 30 unaccompanied men, were aboard. Some were undoubtedly Walloons. The ship arrived in New Netherlands in late March or early April of 1624; and after a stay of just a few days, sailed up the Hudson River to Fort Orange (Albany), New York. These emigrants were the advance party for the
colonization planned by the West India Company. Soon after the harvest of 1626, the Company resettled the 8 families living at Fort Orange, in Manhattan, which then became the center of operations for New Netherland. This included the Rapalje household which now included their first daughter, Sarah.
There were only 270 white inhabitants of Manhattan at that time, and sufficient land so that the families brought down river could support themselves and have sufficient left over for victualling the ships which would put into the port of trade. Since Joris could not ply his trade of weaving under the regulations of the West India Company, he found it expedient to support his family in other ways. He opened the first tavern shortly after arriving in Manhattan. He was a tavern keeper as late as March 16, 1648 when he and 11 other tavern keepers promised as true men to live up to the newly imposed rules in every way and as best they could. The extensive rules were designed to control "unreasonable and intemperate drinking" at night and on Sundays, and the owners of taverns were required to have some other legitimate occupation. Joris chose farming at first and went in for cattle breeding. In June 1637 Joris bought from the Indians a plantation at the cove which the Dutch named Wallabought. Many year later it became the site of the brewery. Until the farm was well established and showing a good profit, and until he had satisfactory buildings on it, Joris and his family continued to live on Pearl Street which
extended to Bridge Street where the Manhattan tavern flourished. In 1655 Joris moved his family to the farm, and remained living there until his death.[Woolley G. W. Family Tree.FBK.FTW.lnk.FTW-3.FTW] Parents: Jean RAPALJE and Elizabeth BAUDOIN.

The above book also stated in the section on the Van Arsdalefamily descent that Sara's last two children by Hans Hansen Bergen, that Jacob Hansen Bergen # 729 and Catalyn Hansen Bergen #1314 were probably twins. However their dateNos of birth are two months apart unless September 21, 1653 is their date of birth and November 30, 1653 is the date they were baptised. This would make sense.

""(4) The term Waal, however, means a basin or inner harbor, and Boght, a bend. Hence the word may have be signified "the bend of the inner harbor," like a similar place called Waal-boght in the city of Amsterdam, (5) This name was some times abridged as Waal, or the Wale, On the faith of old family (The Rapalje Family) traditions, it was long and confidently asserted that on the shores of this bay was born the first child of Dutch settlers on Long Island. This claim of priority for the Waal-boght settlement is not established. Joris Jansen De Rapalje, a Huguenot who had married Catelyna Trico of Paris, and had resided at Fort Orange and later had an inn at New Amsterdam, eventually came to live in a farm on the Waal-boght. The purchase was made on June 16, 1637. (6) it was their eldest daughter Sarah who was erroneously claimed to have been born on Long Island before 1630. After the English conquest, Catelyna's husband died, and she lived on at the Waal-boght - the mother of BROOKLYN - affectionately absorbed in her 11 children and their descendents, who in 1679 already numbered 145.

""The early historians of New York and locality, led astray by a petition presented by her, April 4, 1656 (when she resided at the Waaleboght), to the governor and council, for some meadows, in which she states that she is the first born Christian daughter in New Netherlands, assert that she was born at the Waaleboght. Judge Benson in his writings even ventures to describe the house where this took place. He says: "on the point of land formed by the cove in Brooklyn, known as the Waaleboght, lying on its westerly side, was built the first house, a one-story log house, on Long Island, and inhabited by Joris Jansen Rapalie, one of the first white settlers on the island, and in which was born Sarah Rapalile, the first white child of European parentage born in the (New York) state." In this, if there is any truth in the depositions of Catalyn or Catalyntie Trico (daughter of Jeronomis Trico of Paris), Sarah's mother (a copy of which may be seen on Pages 49-50, and 51 of vol. 3 of New York Documentary History). they are clearly mistaken. In her deposition taken on the 14th day of February 1684-5, before Col. Thomas Dongan, governor of the province, she states that she came over in 1623 or 1624, to the best of her Remembrance. In the other, taken "at her house on Long Island,m the Wale Bought this 17th day of October, 1688 " before William Morris, justice of the peace, she states she was aged about 83 years, and was born at Paris, that in 1623 she came to this country in the ship UNITY , commanded by Arien Jorse, that as soon as they came to "Moannatans", now called New York they sent two families and six men to "Hartford River", two families and six men to Delaware River, eight men they left at New York to take possession, and the rest of the passengers, about eighteen families, went with the ship as far as Albany and settled in New York, where she lived afterwards for many years, and then came to Long Island where she now lives:
Sarah, therefore, undoubtedly was born at Albany instead of the Waaleboght, and was probably married before she removed to Long Island, there being no reason to suppose that she resided there when a single woman, without parents

On the 4th of April, 1656, "Sarah Joresey (daughter of Jores), first born Christian child in New Netherlands and widow of Hans Hansen," petitions the governor and council for some meadows adjoining the 200 morgen granted her at the "Waalebocht;" states that her neighbors mow the meadows in question and disturb her in the use of them, although they have meadows adjoining their own lands, and that she is burdened with seven children; she also asks an exemption from taxes. The meadows were granted, but the exemption refused.
