alienated YorkistRichard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, who had been a powerbehind his throne.

REF: British Monarchy Official Website: Edward IV (reigned 1461-70&1471-83) was able to restore order, despite the temporary return of HenryVI (reigned 1470-71) supported by the Earl of Warwick, 'the Kingmaker',who had previously supported Edward. Edward also made peace with France. He died in 1483.

From GeoffryRichardson by E-mail:

At first light, Somerset sent his Lords and sergeantsto rouse the army,The men stood in their lines, shaking snow from their leather jacks andsurcoats, stamping and slapping to restore circulation. The luckier onesate the food-scraps carefully hoarded since leaving York two days before. They could hear, and could partly discern through the constant snowflurries, the army of York likewise readying itself for battle. Soon theysaw the Yorkist leading ranks move forward down the slope towards theirposition. Dacre, Neville and Northumberland sent archers to the frontready to make the initial response to the anticipated attack.

The wind blew more strongly, carrying stinging chips of snow and ice intothe faces of the Lancastrian lines. Suddenly, filled with the more-lethalsting of arrowheads, men dropped, screaming, kicking, and dying. Under thefurious urging of their commanders, the archers of Lancaster sent flightafter flight of missiles towards the Yorkist line. Soon, their supply ofarrows and bolts exhausted, the counter-fire died down and they were ableto see that it had had little effect. The Yorkist volleys had been sharpbutfew, intended to draw their opponents' fire; the Yorkist archers hadwithdrawnquickly after loosing them. Coupled with the headwind, theincrease in rangehad caused all the Lancastrian fire to fall short of itstarget. Now the Yorkist bowmen advanced again, to use their enemies'spent arrows, as well as their own; their steady, accurate fire causedheavy losses in the front ranks opposite.

With no possibility of countering the galling barrage they faced, the Lancastrians had no option but to move forward. They left their strongposition ontheridge and moved as quickly as possible through Towton dale. They started up the sharp incline towards the waiting, killing steel ofthe Yorkist line. Just before noon, the two lines met and the awfulclangour of steel on steel rose louder and louder in the keening wind, drowning the cries of wounded and dying.Hourafter hour, the men of Lancaster fought to reach the flat ground at the top ofthe rise. The dead of both sides fell in heaps between the two lines, and en threw theirerst while comrades aside to make room for more killing. The tiredorwounded fell back to give way to comrades pressing through from therearlines, hus gaining a little respite; then they pressed forward again o take up the fight.

The roar of battle was loudest round the centre of the Yorkist line. The cream of Lancaster's chivalry urged their men forward to attack the giant figure of Edward Plantagenet - mighty, deadly, wielding his two-handed sword with murderous effect on all who came within his long-armed reach. Their effortswere unavailing and lethal for themselves; Neville - cousin to the Kingmaker -died leading the Scottish legions he had brought out of the Border country sixmonths before, with promises of rich loot. Another with many Scots in his train, Harry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, died in vain. Behind the main battle toconfer with Somerset, Lord Dacre removed his casque to communicate better, and took a cross bow bolt through the throat for his pains. The Yorkist centre stood firm on the rock of its warrior-King.

On the wings, it was different. Here, painfully, at awful cost, the Lancastria Parents: Richard PLANTAGENET and Cecily De NEVILLE.
