Surname: Pixley
Mark and Mandeville Pixley, probably brothers migrated to Vevey, Ingham Co., MI. They appear there on the 1850 Census. In 1840 Mark is in New York State residing near supposed brother, Henry L. Pixley, in Dewitt, Onondaga Co., NY. Henry was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA in 1804. Henry's parents were probably Daniel and Nancy Willis Pixley married in Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA in 1796. Daniel died young and Nancy residing in Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA as head of household in 1820. Later, she lives with her son Henry in Bridgeport, Town of Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.
I would like to learn as much about Mark and Mandeville as possible to link them positively with Henry and his father Daniel. Mark later removed to Nevada City, CA and Mandeville to Lemhi Co., ID.

The death of John Pixley occurred on the day following that of Ashael King, both charter members of the church. The following entry is quoted from the private diary kept by their pastor, Reverend Samuel Hopkins: "Monday, November 1, 1756. Joseph PIXLEY was born in May 1700 in Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA. He died in June 1700 at the age of 0 in Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA. He has reference number 8536. The town records of Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA show a Joseph, son of Joseph and Abigail Clark, dying in 1703 at Age 1 mo 7 days. The record also shows a Joseph born 4 March 1703 (year has been marked over.) One son named Joseph had a long and fruitful life. He must have been the second one. With the birthdates of the rest of the children the only place he fits is with a birth date of March 1703. Therefore, it is speculated that the first Joseph was born May 1700 to give the proper distance from his parents marriage. This would put his death in June 1700. Figuring 9 months from that date gives March 1701, which is the birth date of Jonah. Parents: Joseph Lawrence PIXLEY and Abigail Marvin CLARK.

Joseph PIXLEY was born on 4 March 1702/3. He was born on 4 May 1703 in Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA. He lived in Claverack, Columbia Co., NY about 1751. Joseph was on the committee, chosen at the first town meeting of the proprietors of the Upper Township (Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA) on 8 March 1742, at the house of Daniel Nash, to determine the site and take charge of the building of a "meeting house for the public Worship of God, and to erect said house on the East side of the River," and "to agree with some proper person or persons that shall appear to undertake the building of said house and to find all materials and finish said house within and without." This meeting was held under the authority granted by the House of Representatives 13 January 1742,empowering the inhabitants " by a major vote, at a meeting or meetings properly called for that purpose, to raise money for the building of a convenient meeting house for the public worship of God in such place on said land as they shall agree upon; and also, from time to time, to agree with and support an able, learned and Orthodox minister to preach the word among them." An interesting account of the laying off of Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA as the North Parish, or Upper Township of Sheffield, 1742-1761m and of the beginnings of the church life of said township, in which frequent mention of Joseph and John Pixley occurs, is seen in [Source: Taylor's History of Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA, Pages, 76 to 100, published 1882. His will was dated at Claverack 8 March 1760; probated 9 December 1786." Joseph served in the French and Indian War. [Source: McCallum]

[Source: Bird and others have shown a second wife. The first one having died before 1681:IT] Undoubtedly the first of the name Pixley who settled in America was William Pixley who came to Rhode Island from England some time before 1662. He was born circa 1635-1640. He became one of the earliest settlers of Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA, which was founded in 1661. According to Judd's History of Hadley, Story of Hadley, 1883, Page 25; "three young single men applied for land in Hadley in June 1662. They were John Taylor, John Ingram, and William Pixley, and in December, a small house lot was granted to each." Judd believed that at least one, and possibly all three, had been servants. According to an old map of Hadley as it appeared in 1663, William Pixley was the owner of a two-acre plot of land in the far corner of the Township of a peninsula formed by a bend in the Connecticut River, and on the road known as the road to Little River District. The waters of the Connecticut long ago washed away the land embraced in the small plot. There is no record of William Pixley's birth, nor of his life and history prior to his settlement in Hadley in 1663. In that year he married Sarah Lawrence, of whose birth and parentage we have no record. In 1668, he moved from Hadley to Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA. In the Records of Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA Proprietors, he is mentioned as the owner of "a home lot bought of Thomas Dewey as appears by a deed bearing date November 24, 1668 bounded butting on the highway Southerly and upon the land of Josiah Dewey Northerly and Easterly and Thomas Salmons land Westerly containing five acres more or less." He was also named as the owner of two other "parcels", one probably about eight rods by four, the other "Containing four acres be it more or less." He served under Captain Lathrop in King Phillip's War of 1676, and in 1678 he is recorded as having taken the "Oath of Allegiance . . .administered by ye Worshipful Major Pynchon to ye several Inhabitants . . . of Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA . . .February 8, 1678." About 1680, he moved to Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA, where he died October 9, 1689. Sarah (Lawrence) Pixley joined the church in Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA November 7, 1686.
She died December 25, 1713. Some sources [Source: Judd, Forbes Library, Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA] suggest that William Pixley may have resided a short time at Deerfield, Franklin Co., MA before moving to Hadley, and that he had a second wife, Mary, who may have been the daughter of Jonathan Hillyard, but there is no confirmation of this. There is also some association with Ann Stains, as witness her will taken by Robert Porter, John Clarke, and Samuel Cowles: "This prasant December 24, 1670, I an stans . . . of farmingtowne, being stricken in years . . I give to Rodger Nuton, sun of Mr. Rodger Nuton of Milford, five pounds, to be payed in a cow if worth so much . . if not, to be made up in other instat . . .
It. I give Too William Pixley of north Hampton my badd with all the furnyture or bading belonging Too it, which is a flock badd, one grey rodg, twoo blanckets, one boallstar, one pillow, one pil Lou bere, one payre of Shetes foare cartins, and the Vallyancs belonging To Them.
It. I give to Samuel Coll of farming my biggest ioryne pot.
It. I give to John clarck of farmingtowne my skillet.
It. I give elisibath Judd, the daughter of bengimen Judd my biball . . ." William Pixley was a farmer. According to records in the Hadley Town Hall, the name was spelled Pixsley; and according to the same source, the following were listed with the Pixley family records: Jonathan Hillyard, born Abt. July 1644; died December 29, 1729, and wife born Abt. 1644; died June 5, 1728. The connection between these families is not known. According to Book 1, Page 14 of the Hampshire Co., MA. Probate Records 1660-1780, the following suit was brought before the Court at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA on September 30, 1662: "William Pixley of Hadleigh Pff (plaintiff) contra Joseph Roots of Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA Defdt (defendant) in an action of Slander for forty pounds damage of him in saying that he had got Sarah Lynsley with child and the Jury found for the plaintiff the sun of ten pounds." Later, on Page 261, is recorded the inventory of William Pixley's estate filed March 30, 1690 by his eldest son, Thomas, totaling 177:00:00 pounds. The Court granted power of administration "to Tho: Pixley aforenamed & Mary Pixley Widow or Relict ro sd William Pixley Deceafed who gave bond . . ." Thus it appears to confirm that William married a second time to a Mary. Moved from Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA to Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA in 1680.

Printed and bound by Peter Paul & Co., Buffalo, Erie Co., NY in 1900. Arranged for publication by Edward Dinwoodie Strickland and the Boston Historical Society.
"Beyond all doubt, the first of the name Pixley in America---variously spelled in the earliest record of the Colonies as Pixley, Pixly, Pixlee-- was William Pixley, one of the earliest settlers of Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA Hadley was first settled in 1661. Old Hadley Street twenty rods wide, extended north and south across the neck of the peninsula formed by a bend in the Connecticut long ago washed away the land embraced in the little plot of but two acres.
Of William Pixley's birth we have no record, nor do we know of his life and history until we find him in Hadley, in 1663. In the records of Northamton Proptietors, we find him mentioned as the owner of 'a home lot bought of Thomas Dewey as appears by a deed bearing date November 24,1668 bounded butting on the highway Southerly and upon the land of Josiah Dewey Northerly and Easterly and Thomas Salmons land Westerly containing five acres more or less'. Again we find him named as the owner of two other 'parcells', one probably about eight rods by four, the other 'containing four acres be it more or less'.
He is recorded as having taken the 'Oath of Aleageance administered by ye Worshipful Major Pynchon to ye several inhabitants of Northamton February 8,1678'. About 1680 he moved to Westfield, now Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, where he died October 9,1689. Sarah(Lawrence) Pixley, wife of William, joined the church in Westfield (now Springfield), Hampden Co., MA November 7,1686. She died November (possibly December) 25,1713. Eight children, two girls and six boys, one of whom died in infancy, were born to William and Sarah, and from five of these children we believe that all of the Pixleys have descended."
