Union township organized one school district and located the site for a b uilding in section one, township three south, range one west (by Grantsbu rg). On October 22, 1853, Robert DENBO sold the site for the house to th e trustee. This was known as the Grantsburg school.<file:///C:/ANN%27S/We bfiles/American%20Local%20History%20Network/IN_Counties/Crawford-Co-IN.ht m> The superintendent's report for 1853 states there were 260 pupils in U nion township at that time. The next year, in 1854, Malachi OTT (a farmer , born about 1814, in Kentucky, per the 1860 Census) sold the trustee a s ite for a house near present-day West Fork, in section 29, township thre e south, range one west. Later this school-house was relocated near to Mi fflin.<file:///C:/ANN%27S/Webfiles/American%20Local%20History%20Network/I N_Counties/Crawford-Co-IN.htm> By 1855, Union township had added 3 new sc hool-houses. That year schools were reported to have been attended by 16 1 boys and 144 girls, and there were 3 male teachers with a salary of $18 . By 1856, all five school-houses were apparently functioning, the numbe r of teachers (men) had been increased to 5 and there were 340 students i n Union township. By 1859, Union township had 6 log school-houses and 2 f rame-style structures. Strangely, the 1860 U. S. Census for Union Townshi p did not identify a single person with the occupation of teacher. A ne w Constitution was adopted and the trustees were empowered by law to lev y taxes and build school-houses, and by 1865 each township had enough sch ools to provide suitable room for all the pupils. However, when the edito r of the Indiana School Journal visited Crawford County, in 1865, he repo rtedly found the schools in a poor condition . http://home.att.net/%7ELocal_History/Crawford-Co-IN.htm#Union_Twp <http:/ /home.att.net/%7ELocal_History/Crawford-Co-IN.htm>
