Mary NICHOLS1222,1591 was born in 1744 in Goose Creek Mm, Loudoun Co., VA[1750 ].1222 She died after 1811 at the age of 67. Notes for Mary Nichols:
Like many of the early Quakers, Mary's father Isaac, strongly opposed vocal and instrumental music and dancing, gay and stylish raiment for his women folk, and even the beautification of his home grounds with flower gardens. But of his six daughters, Mary the second "was simply not born to adhere to any sombre form of religion. She loved all kinds of music, was continually singing and dancing, would laugh long and heartily over anything that amused her and dearly loved beautiful clothes of the gayest colors. In fact Mary was bubbling over with vitality and high spirits, and there was no place in her life for any religious doctrine or manner of living that excluded them." Her father was deeply disturbed, and as a last resort, made his will disinheriting her.
Hannah Ingelow Janney was one of the leading Quaker leaders in the Goose Creek MH, and hearing of Isaac's harsh action toward his daughter, called at the Nichols home. Upon hearing Isaac's frustration in making Mary abide by the Quaker customs, she replied, "Isaac, thee knows she gets her stubbornness hosestly; she gets it directly from thee. Now Isaac, I have come to tell thee that thee must change thy will and make it conform to the discipline of the Friends, which provides that all the children shall share equally in their father's estate."
After some time in argument, Hannah wrote a codicil to his will which enabled Mary to inherit an equal share of her father's estate. She had him sign and she witnessed it. After many years had passed and he had mellowed and softened his views, he wrote another will, whick fully included Mary.
Mary was to become the second wife of Solomon Hoge, a highly capable and respected man, with whom she lived happily for many years. "Her descendants are now widely scattered in a number of our states and many of them still preserve and cultivate their love of music and cherish the beautiful things of this world."

"The Hoge, Nichols and Related Families - Biographical/Historical - A Sequential Arrangement of Genealogical Data," by William D. Nichols, 4578 Rain Park Drive, Fairview Park, OH 44126, Sept. 1969.
[Mary H. Staats found a marriage date of 1704-7-13 in the Gilbert Cope Collection at the PA Historical Society in Philadelphia. However, the following entries appear in the Staffordshire Parish Register, Rugely: 1697, Sept. 25 married Thomas Nichols and Susanna Checkleton 1698, July 8. Baptized Anne, d. of Thomas and Susanna Nichols 1705-6, Feb. 24. Baptized Elizabeth d. of Thos. Nichols 1705-6, Mar. 4. Buried Susanna, wife of Thomas Nichols. It is possible that Thomas married twice - and that he became a Quaker through his second wife, Mary Ludford. In old writings fours and sevens are easily and frequently mistaken. the 1704-7-13 date could, in fact, have been 1707-7-13. If so, what became of the daughters Anne and Elizabeth by the previous marriage? It is true that Mary was a staunch and influential member and possibly a minister of the Society of Friends, even back in those days as indicated in the following biography copied by Pauline E. Nichols from "Biographical Sketches of Ministers and Elders and other Concerned Members of the Yearly Meeting of Philadelphia" published in the Freinds Magazine, Vol. 35, p. 116, 1861, 7th day, 12 mo. No. 15, Vol. XXXV.]
In any event, Thomas Nichols and his wife Mary (Ludford) were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers), and they came to America from Rugely, Staffordshire, England, in 1712. Thomas and Mary's certificate of removal had been granted by the Society, dated 1711, and was received in Philadelphia on June 12, 1712. It mentioned Thomas, Mary and children [they eventually had eight]. This observation was supported by another Nichols researcher [mnichols@accs..net (Mike Nichols).
In Saxon times Rugely was one of seven Hayes or Bailiwicks of Cannock Forest which then extended from the Tame on the east to Penk on the west and from Trent and Sow on the north to a boundary line on the south through Wolverhampton market place, Bilston and Wednesbury. It included 8,640 acres (in Domesday Book 1086) of forest, 4 1/2 acres meadowland, and 600 acres ploughland.
NICHOLS: THE NAME: The name Nichols did not appear in England before the period of Norman French occupation and amalgamation. The Normans brought it with them from the continent and due to its religious association with St. Nichols, who lived several centuries before and had become widely known as a patron saint of children, the name became quite popular in England about the time family names were being formed, that was in the period centering around the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries. There were some twenty-five different lines of Nichols closely connected back in England. The earliest in America seem to be Thomas Nichols of Hingham and probably before that in the vicinity of Cambridge, Mass.; Sargent Nichols in CT;
Thomas Nichols of Malden, Mass., and perhaps a brother of his; (They may have been cousins of Thomas Nichols of Hingham) and Thomas Nichols of Newport, RI.
The PA Historical Society Library in Philadelphia is said to have on file a most interesting accout of the origin of the Nichols Family. In early records the name is written Nichols, Nicholls, Nickols and Nickles,
often interchangeable for many of the same persons. The correct spelling, however, in recent times is Nichols as used by Thomas and Mary (Ludford) Nichols who came from England in 1712 and settled in Chester Co, PA, where they were members of the Society of Friends Kennett (or Newark) Monthly Meeting. The name is written Nichols in the early records of Kennett Monthly Meeting and Concord Monthly Meeting, PA, whence most of the family came, sometimes by different Meeting routes, to Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, Virginia, where they were members of Fairfax or Goose Creek Monthly Meeting.

About 1715, they settled in Chester Co., PA. They had eight children together, the first three supposedly born in England, and the last five born in Chester Co., PA. Thier sons Thomas and Isaac removed to Loudoun Co., VA in the 1740s. Many Nichols decendants resided in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio near our varied ancestors. Thomas and Mary were solemn Quakers.

It seems unlikely, but Thomas Nichols may be the same who was married previously in Stafford, Staffordshire to Susanna Checkleton who died in March 1706 (but this could easily be a different Thomas and the claim they are the same seems to be speculation). It is claimed that Thomas and Mary (Ludford) were married 13 Sept.1704 at Stafford (Gilbert Cope Collection; PA Hist. Soc., Phila., PA), however it is also claimed that the "4" may be a misread "7" and that the marriage year may be 1707; this would reconcile the suppposed previous marriage, but may not be accurate.
(see notes below.)

Various secondary sources have claimed that Thomas and Mary were from "Badgley Ensor", Staffordshire, but looking for "Badgley Ensor", it seems there no town or villiage of that or a similar name in Staffordshire. However, there is a "Baddesly Ensor" Parish near Atherstone and Hurley in northern Warwickshire. (There is also another Baddesly in England, but not in that area.)

Similarly, some secondary sources claim Thomas and Mary came from "Rugby" in Staffordshire, England, and that they arrived in Philadelphia from England in "Oct 1711" or "29 June 1712" at Philadelphia, PA. This is not quite acurate. The certificate to transfer was dated 7 Sept. 1711. It was received by Philadelphia 26 Aug. 1712. Hinshaw read it to be from "Rugby, Staffordshire". Researching place names, the the English market town of "Rugby" is situated in Warwickshire, to the south of Staffordshire. There is also a market town of Rugeley in Staffordshire, which could have been misread as "Rugby".
Further research is needed to determine where the nearest Quaker MM was located: either in "Rugby, Warwickshire", or "Rugeley, Staffordshire", depending where the couple lived before they removed to Pennsylvania. Rugeley, Staffordshire is about eight miles to the south-east of Stafford, Staffordshire; Wolverhampton is about 15 miles to the south of Stafford. Rugby, Warwickshire is about 18 miles to the north-east of Warwick, Warwickshire; "Baddesley Ensor" is not in my atlas. Warwickshire is directly to the south of Staffordshire with the city of Birmingham situated between them.

----
I read one claimed that Thomas and Mary Nichols removed from Philadelphia to "Concord (now Blairs Mills, Huntingdon Co, PA)" in 1714, but I have not seen primary records of this. It seems certain they removed to Chester Co. PA, within the scope of the Newark Monthly Meeting, by late 1715. Thomas received a land warrant for 500 acres 15 Jan. 1714, and received another for 200 acres 12 Jan. 1716 in Chester Co.
Several sources claim they were members of Kennett MM, Chester Co., PA. (Questions: Is Newark MM the same Newark MM, DE?; that part of DE was thought to be in PA for a short time. Perhaps Kennet Meeting House was attached to Newark MM before a Monthly Meeting was established at Kennett, Chester Co., PA? Newark, DE, Hockessin, DE and Kennett, PA are only a few miles apart. A little research will straighten this out.)

William NICHOLS[xUpline] (private). Parents: ??? NICHOLS and Mary JEFFERSON.

William NICHOLS1222,1347,1591,1592 was born in 1742 in Hockessin, DE[VA ][Loudoun Co. VA}.1222,1591,2756 He died on 13 December 1802 at the age of 60 in Loudoun Co., VA At His Farm Between Hamilton & Purcellville.1347,1591,3663 He was buried in Goose Creek Meeting House, Loudoun Co., VA.1592 In Dec 1769, William requested certificate to Abington MM to marry Sarah Spencer [Early Church Records of Loudoun Co., VA, p.77].
According to "The Hoge, Nichols and Related Families," by William D. Nichols, 1869, William died at his farm between Hamilton and Purcellville, VA.
Ref: "The Hoge, Nichols and Related Families - Biographical/Historical - A Sequential Arrangement of Genealogical Data", by William D. Nichols, 4578 Rain Park Drive, Fairview Park, OH 44126, Sept. 1969 pg. 256
Members of the Nichols and Hoge families emigrated to Virginia from Pennsylvania in the early seventeen hundreds and settled in general area of Frederick, Fairfax and Loudoun counties. At the turn of the century many of their descendants pushed on westward to Ohio, the first state to be carved out of the great Northwest Territory.
Endless hours of research would be necessary to trace, in detail, the linage of the representatives of these two families who are not included in the preceding genealogy but who are the subjects of various historical sketches. Suffice it to say that the multitude of references to these names found in hinshaw's encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy give evidence of close family relationships.
the Nichols family is of English extraction and was founded in VA by two brothers, Isaac and William Nichols, followers of George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends. After settling in Loudoun County, Virginia, they continued to reside there the remainder of their lives; their tombstones may be found in the graveyard of the Friends Meeting House on Goose Creek. William Nichols married Sarah Spencer and had three sons, Isaac, Samuel, and William, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Piggot and Mrs. Edith Tate.
William Nichols (I), eldest son of Isaac Nichols and Margey Cox, was born in Dec. 1742 or early 1743 likley in Chester Co., PA, or perhaps in Maryland or even Delaware. His father was of Chester Co., PA and his parents were married in New Castle Co., DE where his mother's family lived. It is noted that the young family removed to Loudoun Co., VA from Chester Co., PA in 1743.

William was raise near Goose Creek in Loudoun Co., VA. His parents were respected and solemn Quakers. It seems that William, as a young man, lived for a time nearer to Fairfax MM, VA* as he was liberated to married Sarah Spencer 30 Dec. 1769 by Fairfax MM, VA and granted certificate to transfer to Abington MM, Pensylvania where Sarah was a member. They were married 22 March 1770, likely at at Abington MM. Shortly thereafter, they removed to Loudoun Co., VA, Goose Creek neighborhood, where William and Sarah raised their family. Their farm was located about two miles north of the villiage of Goose Creek (now Lincoln, between the towns of Hamilton and Purcellville and slightly to the south) and afterward came into posession of thier son, William Nichols (II), who built an addition to the house to accomodate his mother, Sarah, after his father's death and in accordance to the will of his grandfather, Isaac Nichols. The house was sold to William Hatcher in 1836 when William (II) and family removed to Columbiana Co., OH and was occupied by William McCray in 1891.

* The Society of Friends generally required members to be members of the Monthly Meeting nearest to their residence, except in very unique circumstances. The Nichols family is noted in the minutes of Fairfax, Hopewell and many other MMs in Virginia and elsewhere.---
It seems the "two brothers" here mentioned shoud be Isaac and Thomas, father and uncle to William Nichols who maried Sarah Spencer. William, brother to Isaac and Thomas, may have resided in VA, but it seems Thomas Nichols lived near his brother Isaac Nichols in Loudoun Co. William Nichols, the subject here, owned and resided on the same tract originally conveyed to his Uncle Thomas in 1742.

----
Howard Jenkins, on p. 69 of "Samuel Spencer of Pennsylvania" (1904), states:
"William Nichols was the grandson of Thomas and Mary Nichols, 'who came from England about 1716.'* They had eight children, one of whom, Isaac, married Margery Cox, and was the father of William."
On p.70 of that book, a letter, written by William Nichols (III; b. 1821) dated 29th Seventh Month 1891, to William Piggot of Virginia, states: "My grandfather [William Nichols I] lived and died on the farm father sold to William Hatcher, in 1836, now the William McCray farm. ... [He] died about the year 1800, aged nearly 60.** Grandmother [Sarah Spencer] lived seven years after him with my father [William Nichols II].*** I think the small brick room attached to the stone house at McCray's was built expressly for her. I often heard father speak of Nathan Spencer."****

* Thomas and Mary Nichols were received at Philadelphia MM in 1712 with a certificate dated 1711.
** William Nichols, the subject of this sketch, died shortly before 13 Dec. 1802 as that is the date his father, Isaac, wrote a codicil to his will addressing the issue of the death of his "eldest son, William". The estimated birth date of William (I) is noted as 1742 by many secondary sources. I note the 22 March 1742 marriage date of his parents suggests he was born no earlier than Dec. 1742 and easily in early 1743 so the claim that William (I) was "aged nearly 60" corroborates the late 1742/ early 1743 birthdate and late 1802 deathdate I suggest here.
*** That would place the death date of Sarah (Spencer) Nichols about 1809 or 1810.
**** Nathan Spencer (b. 1734), the brother of Sarah Spencer, lived to the north and adjacent to the Isaac Nichols land purchased from Joseph Dixon.
