Isaac NICHOLS[xUpline] (private). Parents: Sergeant Francis NICHOLS.

Isaac NICHOLS1222,1591,1592,2755 was born about 1721 in Hockessing,New Castle,Deleware.3335 He died between 13 December 1802 and 31 December 1802 at the age of 81 in Goose Creek,Loudoun,Virginia.1592,3335 He was buried in Goose Creek Mm, Loudoun Co., VA. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 8, Ed. 1, Tree #3852, Date of Import: 23 Aug, 1998] Isaac came to Loudoun Co., VA, from Chester Co., PA in 1743. Like many of the early Quakers, he strongly opposed vocal and instrumental music and dancing, gay and stylish raiment for his women folk, and even the beautification of his home grounds with flower gardens. Thomas Paine is said to have remarked, "There is more common sense in the Quaker doctrine than in that of any other religious organization, but if a Quaker and made the world there would never have been a flower to bloom or a bird to sing."
REFERENCE: The Hoge, Nichols and Related Families - Biographical/Historical - A Sequential Arrangement of Genealogical Data, by William D. Nichols, Sept. 1969, p. 259
When Isaac brought his bride, Margery Cox, of eighteen months to Loudoun Co., VA., he entered upon a tract of land which became the very heart of the realm of Goose Creek Monthly Meeting. Here he selected a site overlooking Goose Creek, on which he built a stone house which is still standing and occupied to this day (1969). Quoting from "Legends of Loudoun Valley" by Joseph V. Nichols, the Patriarch of Purcellville, Isaac Nichols "was a successful business man and was the father of nine children, all of whom lived to mature years. He was uncompromising in his Quaker doctrine and unswerving in his observance of the more sombre side of the Quaker discipline." Isaac died in Loudoun County, VA, in 1802 and Margery in 1806, both leaving wills. Isaac owned several thousand acres of land near Lincoln, VA, and left a considerable estate.
In the "Nichols vs Hogue" case, the heirs of Isaac Nichols, petitioners, allege that Isaac Nichols the elder, deceased, departed this life intestate in the course of the year 1820 [sic. 1802] as to certain portions of his real estate in the county of Loudoun being an undivided moitey of a tract of 130 acres called the "Greggsville" tract, a lot called the meeting house lot of about 22 acres and two thirds of a tract of land which he devised to James Hogue the whole containing about 175 acres. The other third of said last mentioned tract belonged to Wm. Nichols, your petitioner. Said Isaac Nichols the elder died intestate as to said two thirds of this reason: he devsed the same to James Hogue, neither a child of his nor the descendant of one, who died before him the said Isaac and the devised therefore, as your petitioners are advised lapsed." The petitioners ask for a sale of the said lands in question and a division of the proceeds among the many heirs. They also pray that Wm. Hogue be made a defendant and that he be summoned to show cause why the said land be not sold.
In this case the spelling "Nicholls" and "Hogue" are uniformly used for the many heirs involved.

[EXTRACT FROM SEPTEMBER, 1999 ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST]
"Extraordinary Properties on the Market"

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Meeting House Farm encompasses 90 acres of Middleburg Hunt Territory in Loudoun County. The Quaker-style stone house was built in 1744 by Isaac Nichols, one of the original trustees of the Goose Creek Friends' Meeting. Beam ceilings, large fireplaces and tightly fitted stonework, which are characteristic of Quaker design, appear throughout. The house was totally reconstructed in 1987 and received the Loudoun County Historic Preserva-tion Award in 1988. The first floor has an entrance hall, a living room with window seats, a dining room with a stone fireplace, a kitchen and breakfast room and a two-story solarium. Upstairs, the master suite has a study with custom-built bookcases. The two additional bedrooms
have corner fireplaces. A long hall leads to a covered porch, which steps down to the tiered terraces and the pool. The residence is surrounded by flagstone terraces, wisteria-covered
porches and expansive lawns. Pastures are enclosed by four-board fencing, and six horses can be accommodated in the centuries-old stone barn. The property also includes a four-
room office complex, which contains a one-bedroom apartment. $2.17 million.

I have been out of town, and just got home to download the Isaac Nichols house info and picture Bill sent to all of us.

A comment on the time/facts in the architectural write up.

Isaac did get a 1744 land grant. His brother Thomas had one before that, and sold Isaac half of it, later that land is owned by Isaac's son William. That land was east of current Purcellville, north of the Hatcher land, and William's house still stands, and the owners have some of the family antiques that were part of the house in William's time. The 1744 land grant was west of Purcellville, and much closer to Round Hill. There is a hill on topographic maps, named Round Hill. Isaac owned the eastern side or all of that hill. His brother-in-law John Dixon, married to Rebecca COX, owned all of what is now the current town of Round Hill, just to the north of it.

On the map of the Northern Neck Land Grants, the house of Isaac's that is currently for sale is on the land grant owned by Joseph Dixon. Joseph was a brother to John Dixon, and sells out and goes to the Cane Creek MM area with the rest of the COX in-laws of Isaac Nichols. Isaac bought Joseph's land in the early 1760s.

If this house was built in 1744, then Joseph Dixon built it. If Isaac built it, then it was after he bought it in the 1760s, I forget exact deed date. The meetings held there? I think he may have had some in his home in the early years, as his mother was a minister, and Isaac was always very strong in the church. I don't know if he lived on the land he bought from brother Thomas, or on his own land grant over by Round Hill, but he didn't live on the Joseph Dixon land grant property until after 1760s sometime, and after the Goose Creek Church was built in 1758. Isaac did a lot of buying and selling of land in Loudoun. The first structure for the Goose Creek Church was wood, and burnt, and then a rock structure was built (year?) and it was damaged in the early 1900s. A new structure was built for the church, and the old structure became the care takers cottage for the cemetery, and sits across the street from the current church. During the time period of the burnt church, Isaac could have held meetings in his home. And he may likely have held meeting at his home near Round Hill.

I don't dispute that he had meetings in his home. But if this house was built by Isaac, it was after 1761 or so, and if is built in 1744, then Joseph Dixon built it.

I have scanned a copy of a topographical map that has the early land grants drawn on them. This is attached. If you can open it with a scan package of some sort, then do so and zoom in and around on it.

Isaac's house is noted on the Joseph Dixon 670 a plot. To the west of his is Joseph West, 80 a 1765. Joseph bought this when his daughter married Jacob Nichols and then deeded the land to them, so this is where Jacob Nichols lived for a while. To the immediate north of the Joseph Dixon plot, is a parallelogram shaped land marked 1741 Thomas Janney 380 a. Nathan Spencer bought this 1763 or so and lived on the road just before you get to Isaac. His house sits in the fork or the road, underneath the "0" in the "380" on the map.

The road that turns off to the level west at Nathan Spencer's has a low water bridge only, and is impassable today. If you continued down that road, just across the property line, is the place Samuel Russell and Sarah Hatcher bought in 1754, still standing. That "Great Rock on the NW fork of Goose CK" is a survey marker, about 3x3 ft, diamond shaped, and is in their front yard. Thomas Nichols, son of Henry, Thomas, Thomas, and married to Lettia Janney bought Samuel's estate and built a house at the edge of Samuel's drive way, on the same road that passes Nathan's, in 1822, still standing.

The William Dodd property, just SW of the Joseph Dixon plot, was sold to the father of David Young. There is a chancery suit where he divides the property among some siblings, including a brother William Young who is married to Swithin Nichols' sister Rebecca.

The Thomas John plot. First of all, this is the father-in-law of Harmon COX, brother of our Margery COX Nichols, Isaac's wife... He sold out to Jacob Reed in 1758.

Joseph West is the ancestor to several of us. He is the grandfather of Swithin Nichols. I don't recall the chain of sales, but Solomon Hoge wound up with this land. Joseph died in Pittsylvania Co. about 1802, but had left several years prior to that. Joseph got a bunch of land down there, from Thomas Jefferson, for something like 10 shillings or some real cheap, almost free price. An of course, Jacob and Tacy followed him there, and Jacob died some place where they didn't record his will, or it was burned in one of the wars.
On the road tha runs past David Young's house, through Joseph West's land, there is a house marked about half way through the land. Yardley Taylor's barn still stands there today, built 1830-40 some time.

To the east of the Joseph Dixon plot, you can see part of the name only. That is John COX, Isaac Nichols' brother-in-law, married to Mary Scarlett. They sell out and go to Cane Creek NC MM area with William COX and the rest of the family.

On the eastern edge of this part of the map I copied for you, you see William Hatcher's 300 A land grant of 1744. He donated the 10 acres out of the NW corner for the purpose of building the Goose Creek Church and Cemetery. The town of Goose Greek changed it's name during the Civil War to Lincoln. They were very patriotic, and did and underground railroad to help the slaves etc during the war.

Touching the NE corner of William's land like 2 squares on a checker board of the same color, is part of the plot that William Hatcher purchased in 1760 from Able Janney, 625 a.. He sold part of this, the western bottom part, to James Hatcher in 1761. Thomas wound up with the top part, and his house is still standing, but off the edge of this map. George got the eastern bottom part of this. There is a road that covers this like a T, that you can only see a top part of the T, but it goes right across, and down the middle of the property. The land James had, later belongs to Swithin Nichols and Rebecca Hatcher.

The two properties to the east of William's original grant. On the top one of these you can see only the 1742. This was the 265 A grant to Jeremiah Fairhurst. Catharine's brother Isaac married Rachel, his granddaughter, and there are some Hatcher\Fairhurst marriages also. They appeared to be good friends, in that the Fairhursts attend the wedding ceremonies of many of the Hatchers. Jeremiah lived at the far north eastern edge of his property, closer to George Hatcher's part of the land.

To the south of Jeremiah Fairhurst, and to the east of William's first land grant of 300 A, is 1744 plot of Jacob Janney. He and Hannah Janney lived here.
Just a little on Isaac's neighbors......

*Kennet MM, Chester Co., PA granted "Isaac Nichols and wife" a certificate to transfer to Hopewell MM, VA, dated 5th day, 9th month (November), 1743. Hopewell received them on that certificate, but does not record the date of reciept.
**Isaac died between 13 Dec. 1802 and 9 May 1803, likely late Dec. 1802.
***Isaac did leave a will dated 22 Oct. 1800, and a Codicil dated 13 Dec. 1802; it was proved 9 May 1803. So, the claim he died "intestate" was not correct.
Also, note that the town of "Goose Creek" change its name to "Lincoln" in the 1860s. It is situated between Hamilton and Purcellville and a few miles to the south. The Nichols "home-place" was situated to the north of Goose Creek (now Lincoln).

----
As shown below, Isaac's eldest son was William; his eldest daughter was Mary. His son, William, preceded Isaac in death, likely by only a month or so, before 13 Dec. 1802. Isaac is also said to have died in 1802, and the date would have to have been after 13 Dec. when he made his codicil to his will.

John Nichols was born in England and came to America with his parents, Thomas and Mary (Ludford) Nichols, in 1712. On march 1, 1728, he married Charity Chandler, daughter of Swithin and Ann Chandler, at Center Meeting, Centerville, Delaware. The Minutes of Kennett Monthly Meeting contain the following items: "5/2/1727 John Nichols and Charity chandler appeared here and declared their intentions of marriage." "8/4/1728 - Friends appointed to see the orderly accomplishment of the marriage of John Nichols and Charity Chandler report it was accomplished orderly." Charity died some time prior to March 30, 1751, the date on which John was wedded to Ann (Bryan) Sharp, widow of John Sharp who died about 1748. John and Ann (Bryan) Sharp were the parents of two children, George sharp and his sister, Elizabeth Sharp, who thus became the step brother and step sister of the children of John and charity (chandler) nichols. Elizabeth Sharp later became the wife of James Nichols, son of John and Charity.
