Recorded September 26th, 1759 from the Original Edward Pynchon, Reg. CHURCH: In Early Church Records of First Congregational Church in Bennington, VT, gives names of parents and baptismal date. I find: Norton, Martin--Sophia, 1787. Translated this says that Martin Norton was the father of Sophia who was baptized in 1787. EMAIL: I had spent a few hours on the internet trying to find an Asahel Phelps that would fit in the time frame and location to marry Rhoda Norton. There is a mixed bag of info out there. An old NSDAR listing showed Asahel Phelps as marrying Rhoda Norton, and being the son of an Eliphalet, and grandson of Eliphalet Phelps. Asahel was supposedly a Rev. War vet. The closest I found however was an Asahel Phelps, b. 16 March 1791, married to Rhoda Norton 15 Dec. 1817 or 1819 at New Marlboro and with Rhoda Norton b. 28 Jan 1785. This would be a different Rhoda Norton than the dau. of Martin. After copying the Norton genealogy for you, I reviewed the pages and found what I believe is the answer. Martin Norton had 4 children, one being David Norton. This David (b. 29 Mar. 1756) mar. Rachel Spaulding and had 8 children including Rhoda, b. abt. 1785 (my est.). This genealogy says that she mar. Asahel Phelps. This would make some sense for a marriage in 1819 to an Asahel Phelps b. 1791. So it seems that the marriage record for Rhoda and Asahel was for the neice of Rhoda, dau. of Martin. Looking further for Thomas Ransford, I found a Thomas Ransford in Sheffield (the next town west of New Marlboro) in the 1790 census, and Thomas Rainsford in Sheffield in 1800. I have not checked further, but I would conclude that the Norton genealogy is probably correct with Thomas Ransford/Rainsford as the second husband of Rhoda, dau. of Martin. I will continue to look for confirmation. With one mystery solved, there is a new one. I believe I mentioned that the Norton genelogy says that John Norton, son of Martin, mar. R. Harmon. After looking again at the copy I have on hand with the magnifying glass and getting a second opinion, it looks more like "E." Harmon. Looking at the few pages of the Harmon genelogy that I have on hand, and spot checking WorldConnect on the internet, all show a John Norton marrying and Elizabeth Harmon, dau. of Ebenezer and Rachel (Winchell) Harmon. The strange thing is that this Elizabeth was b. 1758 and this John was b. 1734; a 24 year difference in ages. That did happen on occassion, especially if it was the males second wife, but still it seems a strange match. Now there is another John Norton, son of Martin Norton, b. 1757, which seems a much more reasonable match. There is another twist here. Both the Harmon genealogy and the Norton genealogy state that John and Elizabeth (Harmon) Norton had 7 children. Again, I don't have confirmation of this as yet, but a one year difference in age of spouses makes more sense than 24 years difference. Any thoughts?
