and shocking deaths that has occurred in Benton in many years was the
ending of the life of Dr. CHA Newkirk on last Friday night during the
Heavey snow storm. Dr. Newkirk, his brother, Norman S. Newkirk, and Ralph
Lane of Wichita, Kansas, a guest in the Newkirk home, left their homes in
Warsaw and went to a pasture near Edwards, Missouri to get the cattle and
take them to the Newkirk farm to be fed and cared for. Norman, the
brother returned to his home in Warsaw about 6 o'clock, but was not
alarmed about the other two, as he knew it would be some time before the
cattle could be cared for, and he supposed the two men would spend the
night at the farm home. In the meantime late Friday afternoon Dr. Newkirk
told Lane that he was completely exhausted from walking in the snow. Lane
assisted him, and carried him until he too became exhausted, when at Dr.
Newkirk's suggestion he started out alone to get help. Being a stranger
in the community, Mr. Lane got lost and spent the night walking or
seeking shelter near a tree to keep from freezing.

It was not until Saturday morning that he found a farm house and his feet
were so badly frozen he could hardly walk or could hardly talk. A
searching party was sent out to look for Dr. Newkirk and at 4:30 o'clock
Saturday afternoon his body was found by two boys who were going to their
traps. The body was several yards from where Lane had left him and 200
yards from a farm house. The position of his body indicated that he had
fallen from exhaustion.

Charles Harry Newkirk graduated from Kansas City Western Dental College.
He practiced at Tuscumbia two years and in 1927 returned to Warsaw and
opened up an office, enjoying a lucrative practice to the time of his his
