Meta Moller
Margaretha Meta Moller was born in Hamburg, Germany on March 16,1728
into a family which would include two older sisters and youngerbrothers
who were to emigrate to America in thier teens. Her father, PeterMoller,
was a successful mechant. After he died her mother, KatharinaMargaretha
Persent, soon was married again, to the marchant Martin Hulle. Botholder
sisters married young:

In 1745 Catharina Margaretha (1724-1773) married merchant Johann
Heinrich Dimpfel who lived "Im Grimm" (in the old City); in 1744
Elisabeth (1722-1788) married Benedikt Schmidt, a Hamburg wine dealerwho
had his house in the nearby Reichenstrasse. Here, intheReichenstrassa,
lived Meta with Elisabeth and Benedikt until she was declared "of age"at
19. And it was here on Reichen Street that Klopstock saw her for the
first time. She became acquainted with Klopstock when she was 23, atthe
age of 26 she became his wife, and at the age of 30 she died with her
stillborn child; they are buried togather next to Klopstock at the
entrance to Christenskirche under the old linden tree overlooking the
harbor. "Meta is one of the most important women which theMiddle-class
culture of Hamburg has produced.She is one of the greatest masters of
German letters: in the middle of the 18th century there was no matchfor
her in this area anywhere in Germany." And the wealth of friendshipand
love which gave to her life and her letters of fulfillment is almostan
anticipation of the entire mental culture of Goethe`s time.
The fortunes of the business houses and the events in the family like
births, weddings, and deaths marked the circle of interests for Meta`s
sisters who understood how beautiful and happy lives were molded inthier
homes. On Solemn, festive occasions poems were created after an old
custom which came from Holland to Konigsberg in the 17th cantury. And
they, too wrote letters--the Scmidt and Dimpfel sisters were alsomasters
of graphic description. Thier letters give the picture of a middleclass
Hamburg family around 1750.
In 1791 Johanna Elisabeth von Winthem, Meta`s niece, marriedKlopstock.
Johanna (1747-1821), the daughter of Johann Heinrich and Catharina
Margaretha Moller Dimpfel, had married her cousin, Johann Martin von
Winthem (1738-1789),a count and son of Minertvon Winthem andMagdalena
Salome Moller, in 1765. Johanna was famous for writing art songs andas a
performer on the cembalo, perhaps inspired in part by herassociation
with the second surviving son of the great J. S. Bach, Carl Philip
Emanuel Bach, after he moved to Hamburg in 1767. Emanuel entertained
visiting dignitaries at his home, Klopstock among them. Parents: Henry , Henrich MOULDER.
