He was a "Chivaler" and being also a member of Parliament, a goodaccount of his career is given in Col. Wedgewood's "ParliamentaryHistory". He served in thefamous Crecy campaign, andwas probably in thegreat fight of the feudal lord, Ralph, Baron Stafford being attached tothe King's division, and it is certain that he took part in the seige ofCalais, because he hadduring its progress letters of attorney dated March20, 1347, describing him as of the retinue of Ralph, who was abroad inthe King's service. In 1359 he wasagain in the retinue of Ralph, now Earlof Stafford. In 1261, Prince Lionel ofClarence (son of Edward III) wasappointed Lieutenant of Ireland and was accompanied thither by a body ofmen atarms commissionedby Ralph Stafford.
