He was a guide to soldiers going to Fort Garland, New Mexico Territory (now southern Colorado). They left Springville, Utah on 16 Sept 1858. He wrote to his wife from "Green River" (probably near present day Green River, Utah) on 4 October 1858. A Lieutenant or Captain Doyle paid him in Ft Garland, and he started for home, but never arrived. He is believed to have been killed somewhere en route by a traveling companion or companions for the approximately $800 earned from the army for his services.
