There is a Samuel McClelland who served in the War with Martin Harmon, Vaughns,
etc. There is also a Samuel McClellan in Erie county Pennsylvania who
witnesses a will of John W. Clark with his son William McClellan. I feel this
family is that family. The d at the end of the name is there sometimes and
dropped sometimes on the same people.

James McClelland was executor of will of William Francis in Erie Co., PA
I believe the following William McLellan to be the son of Samuel:
William McLellan (will recorded 29 Jan 1869 of Washington, Erie, PA

The second Mary, daughter of Jael and John Harmon is listed on pg. 175 in
Artemus Harmon's book and it says her husband is Samuel McClellan and that he
was a physician. This Mary died in 1800, at the age of 30 with four children.
It is possible that he also married Mary, daughter of Nehemiah and Abigail.
Samuel, the husband of Mary the dau of Jael and John, lived to be 89 years old.
I believe they are the same man.

Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve pg 233:
In the year 1812 the report was circulated that the British were coming and
Thomas Rice, an early settler of Stow, Summit, Ohio, rode down from Cleveland
on horseback, hatless, hair streaming in the wind warning all to flee to
Ravenna. The family of William McClelland, then living north of Stow Corners
was among those warned of danger. Mrs. Abiah McClelland hastily packed all of
her dishes in a brass kettle they had brought from Middletown, Ct; packing bran
betwen the dishes. This kettle was hidden under a small stack of hay and the
family hurriedly left. When they learned the report was false the families
returned and during their absence cattle had found the hay stack, then scenting
the bran they of course, devoured it, and Mrs. McClelland's china dishes were
destroyed.

pg. 387: Eliza Griffeth md. Robert McClelland; they came from Avon, NY to
Liberty towhsnip Ohio; later to Youngstown and opened a school in 1826. Eliza
lost her husband and returned to NY until her mother died. Then she returned
to Youngstown, Ohio.

pg 393: A Rebecca McClelland (maiden name Stewart) lived in Youngstown, Ohio.
Had children: Rebecca; Mary Adeline; Lucinda; Lydia; Caroline E.

Volume II of Early Settlers of New York State page 409 states:

A Jonas Morgan who lived in Elizabethtown, Essex, NY served in the Rev. War
under a Sam McClellan.

From an email I received: Hello,

I found your information on Samuel & Mary Harmon McClellan while surfing
WorldConnect. I have a Samuel McClellan in my family who was last known living in
Vermont during the early 1800's. What caught my attention to your information is
that this Samuel was suppose to be a doctor, his wife was "Polly" and they had a son by the name in which I have found both references as; John Hammon and John Harmon McClellan.

My perticular Samuel was born in Petersham, MA, May 20, 1767 and was living after 1819. He purchased land in Shoreham, Vermont in 1791, one deed refered to him as "Doctor Samuel McClallan". His mortgages for the land were held by men from New York City. His son, John, was born in Montgomery Co., N.Y., November 3, 1790. I have seen the name Polly used a lot during colonial time as a nickname for Mary. Samuel would have been a cousin to the large
McClellan families that lived in and around Woodstock, CT.

I thought that some of your information coincides with what I have, even though your focused your research in Pennsylvania. A lot of my McClellan's left New England and settled near Jamestown and other sites in North-western New York before moving on west.

I would be interested in learning if you have ever found more information on your perticular Samuel & Mary Harmon McClellan.
