Randolph "Randel" MAYFIELD , Sr. was born about 1762 in Amherst Virginia. He died about 1825 at the age of 63 in Lincoln County, TN (Questionable, since he was earlier living in KY).. Randolph around 1795 / 1796, along with two of his brothers, Isaac and Micajah removed to the Blue Grass Region of Kentucky. Glenn states the following: " Randolph made a gift Deed to Grandchildren, Deed Book "D" page 64, Lincoln County, Tennessee. " I Randolph Mayfield of Lincoln County, Tennessee for in consideration of the love, good will and affection which I have and do bear towards my loving grandchildren, Nancy Hamilton, Sally Hamilton, James Hamilton, Randolph Hamilton, and Jean Hamilton of same place, have granted unto them the goods and chattels of the named Nancy Hamilton one white cow and one feather bed, five sheets and one quilt. To sally Hamilton a Red Cow and one Feather Bed with furniture, To James Hamilton one Red Heifer and six pewter plates and one pewter dish. This 5th December, 1815., Second Gift Deed to Grandchildren by Randolph Mayfield. "

Note: Glenn's data base list this Randolph as a child of Isaac Mayfield, Sr. - However, most researchers list him here as a child of John Mayfield. Don't know which is correct - for now I'm listing him here simply because most Rootsweb.com files show him here. More research is needed to clear this up ( Date 08 May 2005). Parents: John MAYFIELD , Sr. and Mary "Molly" STANWIX.

Robert MAYFIELD , Sr. was born about 1630 in Gloucestershire, England. It appears he Migrated fr. England to The VA Colony around 1652.. Robert Mayfield (born - 1631 in Gloucestershire, England & died abt 1692 in Essex County, VA. MAYFIELD is from an old English word "Feld" meaning "Field", the name was given to those from Mayfield, the name of places in England, Ireland, and Scotland. As far as I can tell to date (12/22/2002) This is the originial Robert that immigrated from England to the VA Colony around 1652. He came with Richard Longe, who received headrights for transporting him and others to America. He is listed as Robert Maysfield, another way of spelling it in England. He appears to have been a certain Robert Mayfield, who arrived as a poor indentured servant in the Virginia Colony in about the year 1652. The earliest entry mentioning a person with the Mayfield surname in Virginia, of which I am aware, is found in a list of headrights supporting a 350 acre land grant in Glouscester County, VA to a certain Richard Longe in the year 1652. The identification of Robert Mayfield as a headright, seems to verify that he indeed was an indetured servant. He married a Sarah (unknown) around 1656 after working off his indenture period (most likely around 5 years). Sarah was born 1640 in Essex, County, VA. He and Sarah had at least 3 children that I can assertain. They were William Mayfield, Robert Mayfield, Jr., and Edward Mayfield all born in the latter years of 1650 probably after at least 1656. No will of this Robert Mayfield is known to exist. Their is evidence that a certain Robert Mayfield of Henrico County, VA died in the year 1692. If this Robert died intestate, then under the Law of Primogeniture, Robert's personal property, including cattle, would have been equally divided amoung all his children.

"The earliest entry mentioning a person with the Mayfield Surname in Virginia, of which I am aware, is found in a list of headrights supporting a 350 acre land grant in Gloucester County to a certain Richard Longe in the year 1652.
I have carefully examined the original of this document from the microfilm at the Library of Virginia. The grant is found in Patent Book 3, page 135 and I abstract it as follows: 06 Dec 1652: Grant to Richard Longe of 350 acres of land on Milford Haven on westward side of a branch dividing from George Billops. headrights: Edward Dymont, henry King, Robert Maiyffelld, Hannah Cotton, Mary James, Thomas Hale, Lt. Col. Griffith, his wife Anne. The "Robert Maiyffelld" so listed is probably a variant spelling of "Robert Mayfield" as creative spelling is a hallmark of 17th century writing.

It should be noted that while I have transcribed the anme as Robert Maiyffelld other researchers have read the name differently. In the old script, when the letter "s" appears in the middle of a word, it was written in a manner very similar to the letter "f". Hence, it frequently is very difficult to determine whether an "s" or an "f" is intended.
nell Nugent, who abstracted all the early land patents of VA, read the name as "Mansfelld" [See "Cavaliers and Pioneers Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants" (first published 1934), Volume One, page 267]. Furthermore, Polly Cary Mason, who compiled the "Records of Colonial Gloucester County Virginia" (published 1946), at page 49, read the name as "Maysfield".
The identification of Robert Mayfield as a headright, indicates that he probably entered the colony as an indentured servant sometime in the year 1652, or shortly before. Studies of VA headrights indicate that the most common age for male headrights was the 18 - 25 age group. Assming Robert was in this age bracket, his year of birth would be somewhere around 1630. The Colonial VA law, in effect in 1652, concerning the terms of indenture was as follows: Under 12 years of Age - 7 years. - From 12 to 20 Years of Age - 5 Years. - Age 20 Years and Over - 4 Years.
Accordingly, the most probable period of indenture for Robert Mayfield would have been four or five years. Thus, it is probable that he would have completed his indenture in about 1656 / 1657. I have not been able to find any record of a Mayfield having received a land grant in Colonial VA during the period 1635 - 1750. In fact the earliest record of any Mayfield Land acquisition was a Rappahannock County deed from Daniel and Robert Gaines to Robert Mayfield for 105 acres of land in the year 1677. My best conjecture is that this Robert is the son of the Robert Mayfield noted as a headright in 1652. My reasons for this conjecture are as follows:

a.) There is evidence that a certain Robert Mayfield of Henrico County, VA had died about the year 1692 or perhaps a little earlier. henrico County Records Book Number 2 ( Orders and Wills, 1678 - 1693), page 429 states the following:

"Com: Henrico [torn] 1692.....Capt Will Farrar being by ye Last Court Appointed to see ye delivery of Cattle belonging to Robert Jones an Orphan late in ye Wardship of Will Blackman which were given unto ye said Orphan per Robert Mayfield deed doth Return Acc't That ye said Order is performed & that ye said Jones hath received in full one Cow, one Calf & one Bull."
I interpret the above statement to mean that the orphan, Robert Jones, was bequeathed or otherwise due some cattle from the estate of Robert Mayfield, now deceased; the orphan was given one cow, one calf and one bull to satisfy said court order. Most certainly this Robert Mayfield was dead by the year 1692, the year of the court order.
No will of this Robert Mayfield is known to exist; however, the extant probate records of Henrico County are not complete and the records of the adjacent County of new Kent have been completely destroyed for the relevant time period. Also, if this Robert Mayfield died interstate, then under the Law of Primogeniture, Robert's personal property, including cattle, would have been equally divided amoun all his children. It is quite possible that the orphan, Robert Jones, was a grandson of Robert Mayfield by one of his daughters who had married a member of the Jones Family. The later (1720's) Essex County records show a certain Robert Jones associated with the Mayfield's in various lawsuits.

b.) There is evidence that a certain Edward Mayfield was living in New Kent County in 1695. He almost certainly was at least 21 years of age at the time as he was a plaintiff in a successful lawsuit tried in the Rappahannock County Court. I believe Edward is probably a son of the Robert Mayfield who was an indentured servant in 1652 and a brother of the Robert Mayfield who acquired land in Rappahannock County in 1677.

c.) The Robert Mayfield who acquired land in 1677 is almost certainly the same Robert whose will, dated 3 December 1714, was probated in Essex County, Virginia on 16 August 1715. Thus, the year of death for this man was almost certainly in 1715. The will names a wife Sarah; sons Robert, Abraham, John, Isaac and Jacob; and daughters Catherine, Jane and Anne. All indications are that these children were born in the 1680's and 1690's, i.e. after the 105 acre land acquisition in 1677. If their father was the Robert Mayfield, who was an indentured servant in 1652, he would have been in this fifties or sixties when all his children were born; I consider this to be a highly unlikely scenario.

d.) All demographic studies conducted for 17th Century England and Virginia indicate short lifespans. The typical age of death for women was in thier forties, and for men, it was in their late forties and early fifties. A recent study done for colonial Middlesex County, Virginia, a County directly adjacent to Essex County, indicates an expected age at death for men, who had already reached the age of 20, to be only 45 years of age! [See " A Place in Time Explicatus" by Darrett and Anita Rutman, published 1984, page 52]. Accordingly, I consider it highly unlikely that the Robert Mayfield wo died in 1715 was the same Robert Mayfield who entered Virginia in 1652.

e.) The Robert Mayfield who acquired land in 1677 is not designated as Junior or Senior or some other differentiating label. This indicates to me that there was no other Robert Mayfield living in Rappahannock County at that time. Robert's father and namesake was probably still alive at this time, but was residing in either Henrico or New Kent County. " He died about 1692 at the age of 62 in Henrico County, Virginia - Essex County, VA. I have placed the "Mayfield Coat of Arms" by Robert since he was the first Mayfield who migrated to the New World from England around 1652.

The immigrant ancestor of most of the English Mayfields in America appears to have been a certain Robert Mayfield, who arrived as a poor indentured servant in Virginia Colony in about the year 1652. His Father was probably William "MAIYFFELLD" MAYFIELD - Born Abt 1605 in either England or Germany. This unusual spelling of Mayfield was characteristic of the 17 Century. In at least one case, one (1) researcher list Robert being born in Ireland, however this was based on oral family history, whereas the overwhelming majority of researchers show Robert as being born in England. The Mayfield name is English and means "One who came from Mayfield (Field where madder or mayweed grew), the name of places in Staffordshire and Sussex. Another source says Mayfield is from Old English, meaning a "Field overgrown with maygrass". Still another source states the Mayfield name is English: Habitation name from places in Staffs, and Sussex. The former is so called from OE maeddre Madder + field pasture, open country ; the latter has its first element form OE maegor mayweed. The surname itself is common in Notts,, and it may be that an additional place of origin is to be sought in this area. Parents: William "MAIYFFELLD" MAYFIELD.

Like his father, Robert Jr. appears to also have married a Sarah (unknown) around the early 1670's in Essex County, VA. He and Sarah had at least 8 children. Robert in 1704-5 served on a Jury in a land dispute between Nicholas Franklin, Plaintif & Richard Goode, Defendant. The Verdict, Do not find the Defendant a Trespasser..

Some of Robert and Sarah's son's according to the Essex County, VA court records strongly indicate that four of the five sons (All except Robert Jr. who died shortly after his father) of Robert Mayfield (d. 1715) seem to have gotten into serious financial difficulties within a few years of their father's death. Historians of Colonial Virginia identify at least two reasons why so many Virginians, not just the Mayfield's, got into serious financial trouble during this era: 1.) The War of Spanish Sucession, which in America was called Queen Ann's War, ended in 1713. During the war, economic conditions were pretty good in VA as there was considerable demand for products from VA to support the war effort. Unfortunately, when the war ended, as so often happens, an economic slump occured throughout Europe and the British Empire. This slump caused great financial hardship for the small planter class of VA, a class to which all the Mayfields in that colony belonged. During most of the 17th Century, VA Colony had basically been a middle class society of relatively small yeoman planters, who perhaps used just a few indentured servants. However, during the first 30 years or so of the 18th Century, Virginia underwent an economic revolution. By about 1730, the colony had become essentially a two-tiered society composed of upper class and upper middle class planters, who made use of large numbers of slaves to do the work on their plantations, and a lower class composed of a very large number of small, improverished planters who did not possess sufficient capital to invest in slaves. These small planters were increasingly faced with economic maginalization and many were forced to migrate to the frountier regions of the Colony to maintain their economic viability. Life on the VA frontier was difficult and dangerous but is was frequently the only place where land was cheap enough for a poor man to have any chance of economic advancement. Most of the Virginia Mayfields of this period became part of this rapidly increasing poor, small-planter class. The story of the Sons and grandsons of Robert Mayfield (d. 1715) is largely one of a struggle to maintain financial solvency. He was buried in August 1715 in Essex County, Virginia. He died on 16 August 1715 at the age of 60 in Essex County, Virginia. Parents: Robert MAYFIELD , Sr. and Sarah A HARNER.

Robert MAYFIELD was born about 1735 in Spottsylvania County, VA. Robert Mayfield - (born abt 1732-1735 & died Abt 1816) - He was son of Abraham Mayfield, (born abt 1679 -1681 in Essex County, Virginia & died abt 1778 in Grandville County NC). This Robert Mayfield resided in Butt County adjacent to Granville County. He and his family removed to SC (Ninety-Six District in mid 1770's. At least (4) of Robert's Sons ( John, Edmond, Abraham and Samuel) served in the Whig Militia during the Revolutionary War and Robert himself provided supplies to the Whig forces. His son Lieutenant John Mayfield was killed by Tories in 1782. Robert Mayfield died in Chester County, SC in 1816. He died about 1816 at the age of 81 in Chester County, SC. The Reading of Will was performed on 03 jan 1817 in Chester County, SC. This Robert Mayfield (d. 1816) is the father of Edmond and Elisha (Listed in the Chester County, SC Census above). The one person in his household under 16 is probably Ezekiel AKA "Sugar" Mayfield. Final division of Robert's estate, in Chester District in 1818, indicates that he had 8 heirs, 4 of whom were listed by name: Abraham, Edmond, Samuel, and Sugar. .

Glenn states the following:

"Robert's will was read 03 Jan 1817, Chester County, South Carolina - 8 children were named, 4 Sons that fought in the American Revolution. William MAYFIELD was born about 1773 in Virginia.3424 He died after 1860 at the age of 87 in Giles County, Tennessee.3424 ; Chuck states the following under his notes for William Mayfield:

" John and William Mayfield came to Kentucky from Virginia and helped survey some land under Samuel McKee, by order of General Asssembly of 1798, for Madison Academy. They were each given 250 acres of land on the head waters of Pitman Creek, Lincoln Parish, later Pulaski County. They settled on the land with their families in 1798. William later sold his land adjoining John's land and with his family went to Giles County, Tennessee with John's father-in-law, Mr. [Henry] Wolf/Woolf. William's wife was Elizabeth and he had a son William Campbell. Campbell came back to Kentucky in 1851 and bought the nine slaves from John's estate. I am unable to find the old record or any later knowledge of William's family. There is one old letter from one of these old slaves to her brother with the old papers. She states that all the Negroes are close together and are all well satisfied " - Mrs. L. N. Taylor

24 December, 1804, William sold 102 1/2 acres of his 255 acres in Pulaski County, Kentucky to Townsin Fugate for 4 pounds. This land was granted to him by Samual McKee for surveying land.

William "MAIYFFELLD" MAYFIELD was born about 1605 in England or possibly Germany.

" THE MAYFIELD FAMILY "

" The Mayfield family is of English origin. The original home of the family seems to have been in Cambridgeshire, England. Owen Mayfield was Lord Mayor of Cambridge, England, in 1672, and George Mayfield was a freeholder in Cambridge in 1722. Dr. Reuben Newton Mayfield, author of the booklet, "The Boone, Mayfield, Short, and Tait Families", thinks that Owen Mayfield, himself, or his sons, may have come to Virginia, but if such is the case, we have no actual record of it."

" The Arms of the Mayfield family in Cambridge, England, granted to them, (says Burke) on 09 Oct 1684, at Cambridge, Were: "Gules a cross engrailed ermine, in chief two mayflowers, slipped or, Crest: A lion's head coupled gules, holding in the mouth a mayflower or."

" (From Burke's General Armory, London, England) "

"There is a parish and village of Mayfield in Sussex County, England, forty-five miles from London. The population of the parish, in 1903, was 3,164. Mayfield Village is very old, going back into early English History. It had a "Palace", the ruins of which are now standing, and a Manor or Mayfield, which was occupied , at various intervals, by many of the sixteenth century and after the archbishop's property had been turned over to the King Henry VIII, that monarch bestowed the Manor of Mayfield on Sir Edward North, the ancestor of the later Prime Minister, North. Sir Edward North did not keep the property long, but sold it to Sir ThomasGresham, the financial agent and advisor of Queen Elizabeth. In the year 1573, Queen Elizabeth was entertained by Sir Thomas Gresham at Mayfield, even as King Henry VIII had, on various occasions, Been entertained there."

In 1598, the manor was sold to Sir Thomas May, the father of the poet and huntsman of the Long Parliament, who (the Son) was born in Mayfield in 1595. "

" It is well known, of course, that the majority of the surnames of families in England, were derived from the name of the places in which they lived; and it is quite possible that the Mayfield family may have been early tenants of the Manor of Mayfield and thus may have derived its name form the Manor. (See "Mayfield, the Story of an Old Wealdon Village", by E. M. Bell-Irving, London, 1903.)"

"There was a branch of the Mayfield Family living in Ireland in the early part of the eighteenth century, and some of the early members of the Virginia family of Mayfield's are said to have come from this Irish branch. The fact, however, of a family's coming to America from Ireland in the eighteenth century does not indicate that the family were natives of Ireland, but merely that it was the country from which they sailed. A large part of the Irish emigration in the eighteenth century, between the years 1715 and 1800, consisted of Scotchmen and Englishman who had fled over to Ireland to escape the religious persecution to which they were subjected at home. James II, of England, a Catholic monarch, was particularly severe on the Scotch Presbrterians in Scotland and caused great numbers of them to flee over into Ireland. The power of James was broken by William Of Orange, afterward William III, at the battle of the Boyne i 1690. William was of the Anglican Church and he at once began to inflict reprisals upon the Catholics in Ireland, finally bringing that country to a most degrading submission. In these measures, the Scotch and English in Ireland suffered equally with the Irish, and it was from this cause that about 1715 great numbers of emigrants, Irish, Scotch, English, and Welsh, came over to America. The number of the emigrants from Ireland at this point perhaps exceeded that of all the earlier emigrations."

"In this Period a great many of our well known Scotch, English and Welsh families came to America from Ireland."
