Abt 1667 (son of the orginial Robert Mayfield - The indentured servant ) A British Admiralty Muster Book shows that this Edward Mayfield was a sailor on the ship SOUTHHAMPTON, commanded by a certain James Modie, shipmaster, during the years 1702 - 1703! The Muster, for December-January 1702 - 1703, was for "Men who left or joined in Virginia". I can not find out what happened to Edward. Did he die at Sea? Edward's naval service was during the early years of the "War of Spanish Succession" between Britain and France. I'm assuming Edward served on a war ship, since the records obtained were from the Admiralty Muster Book. He may have been involuntarily pressed into service? This was commonplace for the Royal Navy during the entire 18th century. He died in New Kent County, VA. Parents: Robert MAYFIELD , Sr. and Sarah A HARNER. Source: Alice Ann Fesmire's Postings on Rootsweb.com "Alice Ann's Family Tree" - updated 06 Sep 2002. In one of her sources " The Mary Mayfield Birge Letter" she states the following: " The Mayfield's came to America from Ireland. They were among the early settlers. John Mayfield married Rebecca Armitage in 1666 (New England Genealogy, Volume 5, 339). For more than a hundred years their descendants took part in defending "The Settlers" sgainst French and Indians. John Stanwix, a British soldier, built forts for defense - one was completed in 1758 which was called Fort Stanwix, in honor of his name. (The Stars and Strikpes were first raised in battle at Fort Stanwix.) Now Edna Mayfield's version -1939. " The following is an extract for "Tennessee Records of McMinn County Tombstone Inscriptions" (typescrip dated 08 Feb 1940), Vol II, part 1, pages 49-50: "Copied by : Lawrence McConkey, Englewood, Tennessee - Date: April 5, 1939. "Information from Miss Edna Mayfield, R.F.D. No. 4, Athens, owner of the Mayfield Family Cemetery." Note: Alice posts several other "Versions" of the Stanwix Legend not listed here, but can be found on her Rootsweb.com site; "Alice Ann's Family Tree". It also needs to be pointed out that Alice's research on this Legend ends with her making the following statement: " It is obvious that there is no way for John Mayfield to have married a daughter of John Stanwix. The General had only one daughter, who perished with him in October 1766. The General's only son (Thomas) had previously died, as a young man in 1756, undoubtedly without leaving any progeny." She goes on to say That John was murdered by Patriots disquised as Tories outside of his general store in Union District, SC in 1781 during the American Revolution." --- Note: I have a conflict with some of this info, in that another Rootsweb.com Source shows this John as being married to a Mary (Brandon) and show this John as dying 07 Oct 1780, (instead of 1781), in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Need to do futher reasearch on this John Mayfield! According to Phil Norfleet's website - "Mayfield Families of South Carolina" - this John is another brother of Isaac (1742 - 1822), Micajah (d. - 1798) and Randolph (d.- Abt 1825). His subsequent fate is unknown; he apparently did not remove to Kentucky like his brothers." : Jean states the following: " Battle and John W. actually moved to Jackson County, Georgia in 1802. They are in the tax records for Jackson County, beginning in 1802 or 1803. They lived on hurrican Creek. Living in the same militia district with Battle is Charles Whitlock. I believe the Battle's first wife was a Whitlock and Charles is either his wife's brother of father. Robert Whitlock must be closely associated with Charles Whitlock as well. Since Robert owned or inherited the mill, he probably stayed in Union. Battle makes frequent trips back and forth between Union District and Jackson County. Battle must have always been on the go since we find him in land transactions in Union District in 1805, 1808 and 1812 with Robert Whitlock. Battle's mother Mary Crain Mayfield, joins them in Georgia after 1810 and then obtains land through the 1817 Land Lottery, (I've forgotten which county), ........ Also in the same militia district along Hurrican Creek is Moses Snow, the father of Abea Snow who would become Battle's second wife." Parents: John MAYFIELD , Sr. and Mary "Molly" STANWIX.
