Robert de Beaumont; allegedly 1st Earl of Leicester of the c1102 creation. [Burke's Peerage]

------------------------------------

On Leicester, Earldom of [Burke's Peerage, p. 1671]:

Robert de Beaumont, a companion in arms of William I (The Conqueror) at Hastings was granted after the Conquest much land in the Midlands of England, but most of it was in Warwickshire rather than Leicestershire. Indeed his younger brother became Earl of Warwick. Robert also held territory in Normandy and is usually referred to as Count of Meulan. He was a leading political figure in the reigns of William II and Henry I and on the death of one Ives de Grandmesnil in the First Crusade, the funds for campaigning in which Ives had raised from Robert on the security of his estates, [Robert] came into full possession of them, including a sizeable part of Leicester. The rest of the town was granted him by Henry I and it is possible that he became Earl of Leicester.

Robert de Beaumont; allegedly 1st Earl of Leicester of the c1102 creation. [Burke's Peerage]

------------------------------------

On Leicester, Earldom of [Burke's Peerage, p. 1671]:

Was buried as a monk Seigner de Beaumont, Pont Audemer, Brionne and Vatteville in Normandy, Count de Meulan in the French Vexin, 1st Earl of Leicester. Companion of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, 1066. [Desc. of Charlemagne, Vol. III]

William Poitiers mentions Robert's fine work on the right wing of the army in his first battle, the battle of Hastings.

One of William I's leading barons in his fight with William's son Robert in 1077/78. [William I and the Norman Conquest]

Earl of Mellent. [The Roll of Battle Abbey]

Earl of Mellent and a descendant of Hugh Capet, King of France. Came to England with the Conqueror and greatly contributed to the victory at Hastings, and was rewarded with 91 lordships, and was created by Henry I, Earl of Leicester; in his latter days, he became a monk and d. in the Abbey of Preaux in 1118. [Magna Charta Barons, p. 394, 416]

On Easter Sunday, 1105, he went to church with King Henry I at Cotentin, Normandy. Bishop Serlo took advantage of the audience and preached a sermon on the sloth and folly of Duke Robert's rule of Normandy and the sorry state of affairs that led to the peasants having to store their goods within the walls of the church to save them from the freebooters. The bishop also spoke on the evils of long hair, long beards, and peaked toed shoes and exhorted the king to testify by his example against these abominations. The king swore to bring the duchy to order. The bishop whipped out a pair of scissors and gave the king and the Earl of Mellent -- the "glass of fashion", as well as the most sagacious councillor of the English court - - haircuts. [Knight's Popular History of England, Vol. 1, p. 268]

St. Mary-in-Castor, originally founded as a collegiate college by Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester, in 1107, is a bewildering medley of architectural styles, like the remains of the castle which encompass it.

Leicester, of great importance on its prominent site over the Soar throughout the Middle Ages, suffered its first damage in the rebellion of 1101. The big moung of the original keep, once much higher, remains, and the lines of the original bailey, long since built up, are prese rved as the parish boundary. The inner bailey is now termed Castle Yard, and the castle is a medley of buildings dating freom the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, including a 1695 court-house which incorporates a fragment of the original Norman great hall. This was built after 1150, and is probably the oldest surviving aisled and bay-divided hall in Europe. The timber roof is uniquely early, and many of the old oak pillars and struts which divided it into nave and two aisles are in their original positions. [Castles of England, Scotland and Wales, p. 22]

b. abt 1046; d. June 5, 1118; son of Robert de Beaumont and Adeline; father of Robert de Beaumont II. [Ped. of Charlemagne, Vol. I, p. 125]

1st Earl of Leicester; m. Isabel of Vermandois; father of Maud de Beaumont. [Royal Descents , p. 419]

Count of Meulent; 1st husband of Godehilde de Toeni. [Falaise Roll, p. 79]

Robert was rewarded with 90 manors in Warwick, Leicester, Wilts and also Northampton. He and his bro. Henry, afterwards earl of Warwick, were among the barons who reconciled King William and his son, Duke Robert Courteheuse, in 1081. He was known after the death of his mother as Count of Meulent and as such in 1082 sat in the French parliament as a peer of France. With his bro., he espoused the cause of William Rufus, and after his death that of King Henry, by whom he was created Earl of Leicester. He m. Elizabeth, dau. of the count of Vermandois, by whom he had Emma, Waleran, Robert, Hugh the Poor, Adeline, Amicia, Albreda, and Isabel. When Elizabeth left him for the Earl of Warren, he lost his mind and shortly died in 1118. [Falaise Roll, p. 87]

Vatteville-sur-Seine belonged to Hugh, bishop of Bayeux, who gave it to William, count of Talohu (d'Arques), but he lost it when he rebelled aginst Duke William. It then reverted to the dukedom, but later was given to Roger de Beaumont, whose son, Robert Count of Meulent, inherited it, where he owned a castle. [Falaise Roll, p. 121]

Count of Meulent and earl of Leicester; m. Elizabeth Vermandois; father of Waleran II, count of Meulent. [Falaise Roll, p. 186]

Abt 1100, Robert de Beaumont, Count de Muelan, acquired the whole vast estate of Hugh de Grentmeisnil, becoming thereby the most powerful magnate in the country, and, being already a count, was shortly afterwards styled Earl of Leicester (earldoms with English titles were then very few).
