Frank MARKO838 was born on 15 April 1884. He died on 28 August 1919 at the age of 35. He was buried in Mabton, Washington.

Spouse: Alberta May ROBERTS. Alberta May ROBERTS and Frank MARKO were married on 4 November 1907. Children were: Tom MARKO, Joe MARKO.

Joe MARKO838 was born on 8 October 1907 in Blewett, Washington. He died on 29 January 1995 at the age of 87 in Davis, California. He was adopted in Per Barbara's book. Joe was buried in Sunnyside, Washington. Per Dan Roberts: Joe was the son of Frank Marko's brother, Joe, and LenaMarko, he died when Joe Jr. was about 4 years old. Joseph Sr was a miningengineer and was killed in a mining accident. Frank & May took him in andraised him. They lived at the foot of the Mabton grade on what was calledthe Red Ranch on account of the outbuildings being red. They raised softfruit, watermelons, cantaloupe, etc. He later went to live with hismother, but when he was 15 he ran away from her and went to sea as acabin boy. He returned to live with May in Mabton during his high schoolyears. He and Bessie ran a grocery store, "Joe's Market", in Temple City,Ca. until retirement, then moved to the coast of Washington, on PugetSound, for a few years. As of 1995, they lived in Davis, Ca. for severalyears. Before Bessie died, she had been in a nursing home in Davis forsome time. Joe had been living in a small house behind his daughter'shouse, and he continued to live there until his death.

Per Joe Roberts 1998: Because Aunt May was widowed at the age of 31, andraising two boys, she used to rely on my dad (Dee) for a little adviceand quite a lot of discipline of the boys. He said that Dad was sometimesquite firm, but looking back on it he thought always quite fair and thathe eventually came to look upon him as a second "father figure". It seemsto me that Joe kind of adopted the Roberts clan , and the feeling wasmutual.
Joe was quite small, but he was reported to be pretty fast at playingbasketball, so he probably played as a guard. During Joe's senior year atMabton (1926), his team went to the State tournament.
For the next two years, Joe worked for my Dad in harvest as a flunky androustabout (I was about 7 years old). He was kind of a hero figure to usas he could turn handsprings, flip flops, cartwheels and he rode amotorcycle. Dad's sack sewer blew up and quit, so Joe applied for thejob. The "father figure" said, "Joe, you only weigh 120 lbs and thosesacks weigh 135 to 140 lbs. I don't think you can hack it". But Joepersisted, and he was hired to sew sacks at $5.00 per day--with theprovision that if he made those sacks average 140 lbs for the season, hewould get $6.00. HE GOT THE $6.00!!
This combine was a McCormick Deering, 12 foot ground power machinepulled by 12 head of mules. Dad and Joe would go out before breakfast andfeed, curry and harness these mules. After breakfast they went to work;Dick and I had to fill the mangers with hay, clean out the barn, put downthe bedding, milk the cow, etc. We would argue a little about who donewhat, and try to trade jobs sometimes, but one thing we knew for sure, when those mules came in at noon it had better be done. The sack platformon this combine was about 1 1/2 feet from the ground, right alongside abull wheel that was kicking up dust. The sack sewers seat was like aniron plow seat, covered with sacks for a cushion. Joe was wearing only ashirt and denim jeans trying to beat the heat. The part of his body thatcame in contact with that seat acquired some boils; the boils gettinginfection from the denim jeans. It is kind of hard to sew sacks standingup.
In those days, my Mother was kind of sickly, and a lady doctor fromMabton (Dr. Eva J. McKay) was doctoring her for indigestion (it was foundout in later years that she had gallstones). Dr. McKay was there to treatMother and the "father figure" says"Joe, I think you better get overthere on that day bed and let Dr. McKay lance those boils while she ishere". But Joe says, "Not me. No lady doctor is going to lance myboils". In later years, Joe told me that Dad talked him into it, so thesurgery was performed and the boils got better.
The wild rabbits were pretty thick and they damaged the crops. The menwere having a rabbit drive over the Glade, hunting with shotguns. Theywould form a line of men clear across the canyon, keeping the line asstraight as possible. No one was to shoot behind the line, so they wouldnot be swinging those shotguns past each other. If a rabbit got throughthe line he was to be safe. It was hard for Joe to pace himself with someof these older guys, being light of foot, and he got ahead an gotsprinkled with rabbit pellets. So low, so to speak, that he found himselfdown in Dr. McKay's office again, on his hands and knees getting shotpicked out of him. It was reported that there were two different sizesshot in him, so two men had to have shot him at the same time. One fellowadmitted shooting, but they never knew who the other one was!!
Joe and Bessie were married in California and operated Joe's Market inTemple City, California for 35 years, where they raised their family. Wedid not get to see much of them during those years. During this time, Joetold me that he observed two boys taking ice cream bars from the freezercase and putting them in the front of their shirts. He knew the boys andtheir parents, so he did not accuse them of stealing, but got them in acorner and started visiting with them for so long that the ice cream wasmelting and running down their body. The boys were getting pretty nervousbefore he let them go. Joe would get pretty tickled when he told thisstory.
Their daughter, Nancy, told me of another incident in the store. Bessie, who was not quite 5 feet tall, was cleaning out the ice cream case. Thecase was a chest type meat freezer, quite tall and with sliding doors onthe top. She was leaning down in there when her feet slipped, and shestood on her head in the bottom of the case. The case still being cold, her hair froze to the bottom, and they had to get hot water to get herloose!!
Joe went into semi-retirement, and they moved to Sekiu, Washington, where he worked part time in a grocery store. They lived in an apartmentover the store and did quite a lot of fishing. In later years, they movedback to Davis, California to be near family. Bessie had the misfortune ofhaving Alzheimer's Disease, spending her last years in a nursing home. They were married 65 1/2 years and died a year apart. Parents: Frank MARKO and Alberta May ROBERTS.
