She died in 1197 at the age of 68 in Castle Prudhoe, Northumberland, Eng. She has Ancestral File Number LC80-MG. In attempting to learn who Alice's parents were, I have found one record on Automated Famil y pedigrees #1, Automated Archives, Inc., CD100, that says she was the daughter of Richard d e Lucy and Rose. There is also a Richard de Lucy who m. Roesia on the same CD. Sir Bernard Bu rke [Dormant and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 336, Lucy, Baron s Lucy], regarding issue of Richard de Lucy and Rohais (Roesia on CD 100) names only two daug hters of this couple, Maude who m. 1st Walter FitzRobert, and 2ndly, Richard de Ripariis; an d Rohais who m. 1st, Fulbert de Dovor, and 2ndly, Richard de Chilham. In that same work, unde r Umfravill, Burke does not list this Odinel nor a wife Alice de Lucy. John Burke, in History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. I, R. Bentley, Lon don, 1834-1838, p. 214, Senhouse, of Nether Hall, states, "William de Sevenhouse m. a daughte r and co-heir of Lucy. Amongst the archives of the family of Senhouse is still preserved a de ed of conveyance from Alice de Lucy, daughter and co-heir of Richard de Lucy, of Egremont, b y Ada de Morville, his wife, to her second son, Sir John de Lucy, high sheriff of the count y of Cumberland for two years, 31st Edward I [1303], and knight of the shire for the same cou nty 34th of the same reign [1306], from whom, by his wife, Christian, descended the wife of t his William Sevenhouse." It is obvious this Alice is not the daughter of Richard of Egremon t and Ada de Morville. They had two daughters, Annabell (Mabel) and Alice, who both married b rothers, Lambert and Alan de Multon, respectively, and that Alice had only one son, Thomas d e Multon, known as Thomas de Lucie, and he m. Isabel de Bolteby. Furthermore, this Alice, bor n about 1144, could not have had a son who was living in the early 1300s. ************** Parents: Richard "The Loyal" de LUCY Sir Knight/Justiciar of E and Rohese FitzRichard de CLARE. Lewis C Loyd points out that, according to Robert de Torigni, w hen the Justiciar entered religion he was succeeded by his grandson Richard, son of Geoffrey . Roese therefore succeeded her brother, not her father or grandfather, and the inference t o be drawn is that Richard the younger and Roese were Geoffrey's children by a first wife, an d Geoffrey the younger his son by a second wife. The available evidence does not, however, e xclude the possibility that the younger Geoffrey was illegitimate. *********** Parents: Richard "The Loyal" de LUCY Sir Knight/Justiciar of E and Rohese FitzRichard de CLARE. He died on 14 July 1179 at the age of 81 in Chipping Ongar, Essex, Eng.3332 He has Ancestral File Number GS4V-7B. OCCUPATION: Justiciar of King Henry II, of Chipping Ongar, Essex, and Diss, NorfolkLieutenan t of England - ruled in Henry II's absence. -------------------- (b) The family appears to have taken its name from Luce, a commune in the department of Orne , about 6 kil. SE of Domfront, and in the bailiwick of Passeis. In the return of the Norma n fees of 1172 there occurs the following: "De Passeis . . . Ricards de Lucceio j militem e t sibi xvij milites" (H.F., vol xxiii, p. 697 e; so also in Red Book, Rolls Ser., vol ii, p l 639, but beginning "De Baillia de Basseis"). Luce lies geographically in Maine, and its re al connection with Normandy dates from the occupation in 1092 of Domfront, the castle of Robe rt de Belleme, by Henry Beauclerc, the Count of the Cotentin. It seems probable that this pa rticular connection between Henry I and the southern border of Normandy may have first brough t the family to the King's notice, a view which is supported by the fact that in a charter fo r Seez Cathedral dated Feb 1131, Henry mentions a fief which he had bought from Richard de Lu cy, and his mother Aveline. [Complete Peerage VIII:257 note (b)] -------------------- The first mention of this family is in a render made by King Henry I of the lordship of Dice , in Norfolk (whether in requital of services, or as an inheritance, the record saith not) t o Richard de Lucie, who was governor of Falais, in Normandy, temp. King Stephen, and defende d that place with great valour when besieged by Geoffrey, Earl of Anjou, for which heroic con duct he had a grant of lands in the county of Essex with the services of divers persons, to h old by ten knights' fees. In the subsequent contest between Stephen and the Empress Maud, h e remained steady in his allegiance to the former and obtained a victory of some importance n ear Wallingford Castle. Upon the adjustment of the dispute, the Tower of London and the castl e of Winchester were, by the advice of the whole clergy, placed in the hands of this feudal l ord, he binding himself by solemn oath and the hostage of his son to deliver them up on the d eath of King Stephen to King Henry, which, being eventually fulfilled, Richard de Lucy was co nstituted sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in the 2nd of Henry II, A.D. 1156, and in thre e years afterwards, being with the king in Normandy, he was despatched to England to procur e the election of Thomas Becket, then lord chancellor, to the archiepiscopal see of Canterbu ry, vacant by the death of Theobald, Abbot of Becco. Soon after that he was appointed to th e high office of Justice of England. In the 12th of this reign [1166], upon the aid then asse ssed for marrying the king's dau., he certified his knights' fees (lying in the cos. of Kent , Suffolk, and Norfolk) de veteri feoffamento, to be in number seven, and that his ancestor s performed the service of Castle Guard at Dover, for the same, as also that he held on knigh t's fee more, de nova feoffamento, in the co. Devon. About this time Becket, having fled into Normandy from the power of King Henry, came to Wicel iac to celebrate the feast of the ascension, and observing several persons of distinction pre sent, amongst whom was this Richard de Lucie, he ascended the pulpit and there, with lighte d candles, pronounced the sentence of excommunication against them all as public incendiarie s betwixt the king and himself, but being neither convicted nor called to answer, they appeal ed and entered the church. Soon after this (13th Henry II) during a temporary absence of th e king beyond sea, de Lucie was constituted Lieutenant of England, and again in 1173, when th e Earl of Leicester and others having reared the standard of rebellion in behalf of Prince He nry, he besieged, in conjunction with Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, the town of Leicester and , having reduced it, demolished its walls and laid it in ashes. In 1178, he founded the priory of Westwode in the diocese of Rochester in honour of St. Thoma s, of Canterbury, the martyr, and began, about the same time, the foundation of the priory o f Lesnes, in Kent, which he munificently endowed. In this priory he subsequently assumed th e habit of a canon regular and departing this life soon after (about 22nd Henry II) [1176], a nd was buried in the chapter-house there. He m. Rohais ---, and had issue, Geffrey, who d. in his father's lifetime, leaving Richard, h is son and heir, who departing this life, s. p., before 1196, the inheritance devolved upon h is aunt, Rohais; Hubert, who had the lordship of Stanford, in Essex, and hundred of Angre, fo r his livelihood, but d. s. p.; Maude, m. 1st to Walter Fitz-Robert, to whom she brought th e lordship or Dice, and 2ndly, to Richard de Ripariis, and d. 27th Henry III, 1243, leaving i ssue; Rohais, m. 1st, to Fulbert de Dover, Lord of Chilham, in Kent, and 2ndly, Richard de Ch ilham. This Rohais, upon the decease of her nephew, succeeded to the estates of her elder bro ther and, upon the death of her younger brother, Hubert, she had livery of the whole barony o n paying a fine to the crown in the 9th King John [1208]. Robert de LUCY was born about 1131 in Diss, Norfolk, Eng. Some people have Robert as son of Adrian, but they have him born much earlier. I would plac e him as a younger son of Richard who was son of Adrian. Since Richard held Diss, Norfolk (a s well as Dunmow and other lands in Essex), this fits with Robert his son being "of Norfolk". ********** Parents: Richard "The Loyal" de LUCY Sir Knight/Justiciar of E and Rohese FitzRichard de CLARE. This certificate was accepted by Philadelphia MM Sixth month, 9th, 1712. These Friends did not tarry long in the city but removed with their family first to Concord MM, Chester Co., PA in 1714 and from thence to within the limits of Newark MM, about the close of 1715, the certificate from Concord bearing date First month, 12th, 1716, being received at Newark for them the following month. Although no mention is made on the minutes of the Monthly Meeting of Newark of the fact, yet it appears that Mary stood in the station of an acknowledged minister. At least she did a few years afterward, and no notice of her recommendation can be found. She was one of the most useful members of that Monthly Meeting, abundantly employed in the discipline and in religious visits to the families of Friends. Her services in the ministry of the Gospel were acceptable to the church, and she long laboured in unity of the one spirit and died in near fellowship with the faithful in Jesus Christ. Her death took place third month, 14th, 1770, being very aged probably about 90 years old.
