Jean and Marie Jeann e (Girard) Leflore only known child was Louis. A FAMILY MAKES ITS MARK (by Ralph Folsom McBride & Alberta Patrick McBride 1976; sponsored by The L ouis Leflore Family Assoc.) Jean Baptiste arrived from France in theearly part of the eighteenth century as a member of a c ompany of french Infantry sent to the garrison of Mobile. The soldiers at Ft. Conde on Mobile Ba y served to protect the colonies of the town of Mobile from attacks by Spanishand pirate ships. The exact date of the arrival of Jean Baptiste in Mobile isnot known, but on Jan. 9, 1735, he se rved as Godfather at the baptism of a son of Jaques Claude Dupont and Marie Foucalt, "of Paris." Both LeFlau and Dupont were listed as soldiers. On June 19, 1735, Jean Baptiste married Jeanne Boissinot, a native of Mobile. (pg. 6) In the year 1759, jean Baptisite as guardian of Francois and Rene, minor children of the d eceased Jean Girard, his father-in-law, and executor of the estate of Jean Girard, sold "a Mobile t own lot" with appurtances to Jean Claude Mortall for the sum of 800 livres. Oct. 18, 1759, Jean Baptiste received a "grant" of a certain lot of land and house. He was descr ibed as an inhabitant of Mobile in the record which accompanied the transaction. (pg. 7) Mobile had changed from a French to a British colony atthe end of 1763, and during the lat e summer of 1764, British troops arrived to take over the military post of Mobile. In the Census of Mobile taken the summer of 1764, jean Baptiste is listed as a resident. also th at year he was retired from the French military service and granted half-pay of six livres a month. Pursuant to the change from French to British rule, the names Jean Baptiste and his brother-in-la w Francois Girard, appear on the list of French inhabitants who, on Oct. 2, 1764, "took the oath o f allegiance and fidelity to hisBritannic Majesty, King George III." Mobile would be British terr itory, andhe a British subject for most of the rest of his life. Shortly before the death of Jean Baptiste LeFlau in 1780, Spain took over Mobile from Britain. W hen he died on Sept. 15 of that year, his body was interred in the "Campo Santo,"the cemetery of t he church. His death is recorded in part, "Jean Bapt Lefle, a native of France,'' died this day. They wanted to honor the LeFleur family by naming one of the the new counties in Mississippi after this historic family. The name LeFleur came into being by the mispelling of the Name LeFleau by C. C. Claiborne, the first territorial govenor of Louisiana. The name of the family was LeFleau or spelled LeFlau or LeFla. Jacques LeFleau was first dispached by France to Canada to serve d'Iberville in the late 1690s. He was to recieve a land grant. He is said to have married an Indian woman there in a attempt to colonize Canada for France as New France. LeFleau was sent there with his brother Pierre Andre LeFleau. With England expanding their Colonies into the Carolinas, Louis XIV sent a company of soldiers from Canada, under d'Iberville, to Biloxi for the purpose of discouraging any futher British growth into the south and into the Louisiana Territory. Jacques left his Canadian Indian wife. The British had just started a new settlement called Charles Townin the Carolinias. d'Iberville was to attack Charles Town and create a resistence to the advancements of England. The French were to settle several colonies in the Louisiana Territory and to establish trading relations with the Indians in that region. Jacques and Pierre LeFleau were a part of this group. Thiswas in 1699. The Spanish were also attempting to expand their holdings in Florida. The garrison of French moved from Biloxi to Mobile. There the French build Fort Louis and then later built Fort Conde'. Here the LeFleau brothers were to stay and attempt to settle in this area in order to prevent the British from advancing into the French territiory from Charles Town in the Carolinias. Jean Baptiste The year 1712, on the 5 of November, has been baptized Jean-Baptiste, born the day before yesterday, son of Jacques LeFLOCQ, horse-trooper inthe Orleans Regiment and of Magdeleine RICHE, his wife, from this parish. Jean Baptiste LeFlau was a foot soldier in the Company of Sieur de Bombelle by January 9, 1735. He served as the Godfather at the baptism of a son of Jacques Claude Dupont and Marie Focalt "of Paris." He was named Jean Baptiste in honor of his Godfather. In the year of 1735,on 19 June, after the publication of three bans of marriage posted in the Mobile parish, the first 19 May, the second on 23, May, and the third on 3 June of this year, between Jean Baptiste LeFlau, son of Jacques LeFlau and Magdeliene Vichet, the father and mother, of Versaille, Ste. Croisse Parish, foot soldier in the Company of Sieur de Bombelle and Jeanne Boissinot, a native of Mobile, daughter of Rene Boissinot and Donna IsabelleReullant, the father and mother, who signify their consent by signing below with Father Mathias, under the Vicar General of Quebec, who has given the Nuptial Benediction in the presence of these signing with him below. Jeanne Boissinot was barely fourteen years old when she married Jean Baptiste LeFlau. Theirmarriage is listed in the records of The Catholic Center, Archdiocese of Mobile - Marriage Records Book #1, on page 142b as being married on 17 June 1735. Juan Bautista LeFletus died 25 September 1780. This spelling was by the Spainish who captured Mobile in 1780.
