He followed his fathers footsteps becoming a trail blazing surveyor. He surveyed routes from Kentucky line north into Indiana and Fredonia. He was the first supposedly of our Kellems lines to come to Indiana to live. He first lived in Perry County and then Orange County and finally settled inn Crawford County. Some old documents refer to him as the "polygamist" since he was married to two wifes (Sarah and Catharine) at the same time. Family folklore states the two wives families lived just down the road from each other some say just doors apart. James married Sarah Raines from Tenn and had 12 children with her. He married Catharine Mitchell and had 7 children with her. James was on the grand jury in Perry County;, Indiana around 1819. He was appointed Squire of Crawford county, Indiana by Gov.
