The following notes from Nel Lo Bassett 1055 E. Hillcrest Dr.; Springville, UT
1994 Bassett Report:
BIRTH: Family Froup Record--Main Record Section (Archives), family group record of Loren Elias Bassett (1809) and Rachel English. Contact with various family members and the personal knowledge of those living at the time the record was prepared were the sources used in compiling this record. This family group record has his birthdate as 5 Mar 1809 and Granby, Hartford, CT as
his birthplace and his parents as Elisha Bassett and Lucy Gillette.

Bassett Report 26 Jul 1993: "It is sobering to think of Loren Elias Bassett's situation. What was he to do? He had a young family of five children all under ten years old. Who was going to take care of his baby son, Harlow Gillette? The McCauley family, who were apparently neighbors, were helpful and took care of Harlow, and he became part of their family. They moved to Alton, Madison, Illinois where Harlow Gillette spent his childhood and youthful years. Where were Loren Elias Bassett and Rachel living when Rachel died and Harlow was born? In the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records, Harlow's birthplace is listed as New York. Did Loren Elias live close to his brothers in Western New York or close to his wife's family in New York or Illinois? In the 1850 census, Harlow is found living with the John and Amanda McCauley family. He was fourteen years old, which makes his calculated year of birth 1836. In this census, his birthplace is listed as Illinois. He is found in the 1860 census of Madison County, Illinois and in this census, he is living with Clement and Cathrine Loyd famile. He was working as a day laborer. His age is listed as 21 with a calculated year of birth as 1839. Birthplace listed as Illinois. John and Amanda McCauley are not found in this census. In the history of Madison County, Illinois is the statement that Harlow was brought to this state when he was two months old--then the statement, "His father soon after went west." IF the John McCauley family took care of Harlow when he was an infant, then Harlow would have been living with them in 1840 when the census was taken. There was a J. McCauley living in Upper alton, Madison, Illinois in 1840, but this family did not have enough family members for one of them to be Harlow. [Are the McCauley's in any way related to Rachel English?] Another item mentioned in the Madison County biographical sketch regarding Loren Elias Bassett: "word came several years later of his having been killed in the state of Utah." The term killed infers that Loren Elias' death was caused by accident or murder. We have not had any hint that Loren Elias died other than by natural causes. This matter needs to be checked into.

The Patriarchal Blessing Index lists his birthdate as 3 Mar 1809 in Conn and parents as Elias and Lucy Bassett. This information would have been given by Loren directly and is first-hand information.

Loren Elias' given name is listed as Lorin in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 census; and as Loren in the 1856 and 1870 censuses. His name is listed as Loren Elias on the fgs filed in the Main Record section of family group records and the TIB. In the patriarchal blessing index and the Endowment House sealing records it is spelled Loren. It is spelled both Loren and Lorin in the Cache county, Utah land records.

MARRIAGE: No record has been found for marriage to Rachel English. It is likely they were married abt 1830 in either Cortland or Onondaga counties, NY. No record has been found of marriage to Hulda Dimeras Vaughn Harmon. Marriage would have occurred after death of Alpheus Harmon on 17 Nov 1842 and before the first child of Loren Elias and Hulda was born 13 Oct 1844.

CHURCH: All children sealed to Alpheus Amulek Harmon, first husband of Hulda Dimrus Vaughn

CHURCH: In 1867 and 1868, Lorin Bassett of the Providence Ward made an $18.50 donation toward the Perpetual Emigration fund. (Historical Dept CR376, 2, Reel 4, folder 10 p. 310)

POSSIBILITIES: Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve Vol 1 pg. 213: Is there any connection to the following people. Notice the names. The point of this information is this: 1. Loren Bassett had a brother named Andrew. The Andrews family had a son named Lorin. 2. The Andrews had a son named Thaddeus. Loren named a son Thaddeus. 3. Both were from Connecticut. 4. Beman Chapman had a wife whose surname was Vaughn. Loren's second wife was Hulda Vaughn. 5. There were Bassetts in Rootstown (same page).
This is from Rootstown, Ohio. "Mary Whitney came west from Connecticut in November of 1806 with her uncles, Samuel and Thaddeus Andrews, and their families. They came with ox teams, and were six weeks on the road. A slender, active girl of nineteen, Mary, with her cousins, Lorin and Loomis Andrews, walked most of the way. One evening the three cousins found themselves far in advance of the teams, tired and hungry.
While waiting for the rest of the party a woman with true pioneer hospitality asked them to eat supper with her. The cabin was of the most primitive style, the table was of puncheons laid on wooden pins driven into the log walls, and Mary's seat was a pumpkin. The supper which she always spoke of as the "best I ever eat," was pumpkin johnny cake and fresh woods pork--hogs fattened on mast, which gave the meat a flavor of wild game. Soon after her arrival in Rootstown
she was married at the home of her sister, (Sarah Whitney), Mrs. Beman Chapman to Nathan Chapman Jr. A wedding at that time was a matter of much importance. Hers was celebrated at Campbellsport, and the inhabitants of four townships were invited. Some came in ox sleds the distance of eight miles. While they were inside enjoying the festivities of the occasion, which lasted until the morning cock crowing, a warm wind had so disposed of the snow that the next day, if
there had been any to behold, they might have seen the wives on the sleds and the husbands taking the long walk home." (There is more.)

POSSIBILITIES: Andrew Jenson, Encyclopedic History of the Church…, p.561 And about three years later, in 1837, Commerce city (later named Nauvoo), immediately above its namesake on the river, was laid out by two speculators from Connecticut (Horace R. Hotchkiss and John Gillette). Is John any relation to Loren's mother? Why was Loren in Hancock County???

RESIDENCE: From history of David Edwin Bassett by himself: "In 1853, Father immigrated to Northwestern Iowa and took up 160 acres of land i nthe then wild and wooly country. We first camped in a piece of woodsand people who came along there on horseback, saw mother out squirrel hunting. This fellow was scared and told people there was crazy people living there and for them to look out or they would be killed. We lived on this farm and continued to imporve it for 10 years and then sold it and started for western Iowa near Council Bluffs. After camping there for a few weeks, father decided to go to Utah, as Mother already belonged to the church. It took some time for me to make up my mind to go with them as there were all kinds of stories about the Mormons in Utah, and that they would force you into slavery and that no one would get away alive. Finally I decided to go with them. We crossed the Missouri River in a ferry boat, and found a large camp of Mormons near Omaha. Some were from Utah who had come for supplies, and some were from the other side of the river who were going to migrate to Utah. They had been waiting to accumulate as large a train as possible to make the protection stronger against the Indians which were rather dangerous. It was proposed that we should organize and appoint a captain of the train who knowed the trail and camps, feed, water, and etc. Accordingly we appointed one Curtis as captain and we started. In most instances each man owned his own outfit and father started with one team, four yoke of oxen, and two wagons, which was considered a very good outfit in those days. The first day we made only a short drive and stopped to organice our company for the best advantage of the journey. We divided the company into two divisions with an equal number of wagons in each division, and a head teamster for each outfit who would take the lead. One division leading one day and the other leading the next. At camping time, the division in lead would turn from the road to the right, making a circle and pulling back to the road and reaching the road just the time the last wagon of that division was about to leave the road. Then the leader of the second division would turn out to the left and make a similar circle. This made a complete enclosure in which the animals could be coralled in the morning, or could be corraled any time for protection from the Indians. There was in the neighborhood of twenty-five or thirty wagons and we had exceptional good luck. We were instructed to keep peace with the Indians at any cost. Our captain said, "It is cheaper to feed the Indians than to fight them."
One of the chief entertainments was dances which I played for on my violin, which was the only one in the outfit, and it was there I received my first experience playing for the dances.
I think we were on the road about two months and we arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in fine shape and we took up a subscription in the camp to give to the captain to show our appreciation for his services. After camping a few days at the edge of Salt Lake City, every man went his own way. Some went father west, some went south. We went with others north to Cache Valley.
We stopped at Providence, Utah, with a relative for a short time and later father bought a house and lot in Providence, and we lived there. I had heard so many stories about Mormons that I was rther skeptical, yet I loved the association of those people and was interested in the story of Joseph Smith, but could not satisfy myself as to whether I should embrace it or not.

The cattle in both trains were quite poor, indicating that they had seen hard times in crossing the plains.

EMAIL: Samuel C's [Bassett] brother is Robert Loren and it's such an unusual name it seems likely to be a connection to Loren Elias. However, there is at least one Elias of OH who is NOT connected (Elias Bassett and wife Fanny Morford), as proven by DNA. Also Elias of CT is not connected either for the same reason. Anyway, I will periodically be working on this again, and of course Jeffrey Bassett is the main clearinghouse (see http://bassett.net/dna). kathryn@bassett.net

DNA: Three people from the Elias Bassett family have taken part, only one of whom we currently have results back for. Test #2829 is through son Loren Elias. We also have a second test through Loren Elias outstanding as well as an outstanding test for someone descended through son Richard Bassett, son of Elias. The first test was firmly established to be in the group of the Bassetts of Cornwall and matched other tests of those from Thomas Bassett of Connecticut. Loren Elias Bassett is NOT related on the Bassett side to WIlliam Bassett of Plymouth. If you go to my website at www.bassett.net/dna <http://www.bassett.net/dna> and click on the link to Bassett DNA, it will show you a spreadsheet with the results of testing so far. If you click on the test number of anyone that has done testing, you will see their lineage (if they have agreed to show it). All of the William Bassett of Plymouth descendants have some sort of information out there, <jbassett@packagingcorp.com> Jeffrey Bassett
