Nettie (nmn) JOHNSTON838 was born on 29 July 1893 in Rich Hill, Bates County, Missouri. She died on 17 April 1981 at the age of 87 in Sunnyside, Washington. She was buried in May 1982 in Bickleton, Washington. Nettie was cremated in later buried in Bickleton. Per Dan Roberts: Nettie Johnston was born in Rich Hill, Missouri. She andher family went by train to Oregon in the spring of 1900 and after amove or two, settled east of Portland in 1902. In March 1905, the familywent by train to somewhere near Alderdale, Washington, where they weremet by Nettie's Uncle Henry Haworth, who took them to his homestead inthe same general area where Lou Roberts had located. Nettie's father,John, took a homestead in the same area. Dee and Nettie were in the LonePine School #75 (about 14 miles south of Mabton) together.
Nettie was a member of the Aldercreek Pioneer Association, and a 50 yearmember of the Alder Creek Grange of Bickleton.

Note: Nettie's father, John Mitchell Johnston, and his brother, ThomasHenry Johnston, were the only children in their family that lived verylong. Their mother, Agnes Mitchell, died when they were about 7 1/2 and 3years old respectively. Their father Thomas married Margret Jameisonabout a year later, (brought her over from Scotland?), the two boys werenor treated well by her, and when John was about 10 years old, 1866,they ran away from home and went to the home of an Uncle and Aunt, probably this Tom and Mary McComb, because Mary would have been theirAunt - sister of their father, Thomas. The story was told that the twoboys were working in the field and came home late for lunch, Margret hadmopped the floor and wouldn't let them come in to eat, and one of them,in the argument, threw dirt in on the clean floor. She chased them with abutcher knife and nicked one of them a little, so they ran away, asdescribed above. As the story goes, John was adopted by a man namedBieler (sp?) and Tom was adopted by Tom & Mary McComb.

The following are remembrances of Nettie's:
John Mitchell Johnston and wife, Emidy, and the three older children, stayed with Tom and Mary McComb for a short time before moving to Oregon.John worked on the farm, and they lived in a small house to the East ofthe larger McComb house. It was a two-story house, with steps leading upto it. John raised corn, which he shucked and dried in wire cribs, thenfed the corn to pigs and burned the cobs for fuel. This was after Nettiewas born.
After John and Emidy were married in Rich Hill, John worked for hisuncle Thomas McComb, working with cattle and various farm jobs. Theirfirst three children were born in Rich Hill possibly prior to the timewhen he worked for McComb. In the spring of 1900, they came by train toOrient, OR., then made a couple of short moves around Pleasant Home andPowell Valley before settling in east Portland, or east of Portland,1902. There John worked in the railroad roundhouse, and the childrenwalked a mile and a half to school. Thomas Henry was born there in 1904.
When Tommy was 3 months old, which would have been March 1905, thefamily went by train to a point across the Columbia River from Carley,WA. (Another account indicates that they came by train to Alderdale, WA.in 1904. If Tommy was 3 months old, it would have to have been 1905.Needs further checking). There they were met by Emidy's brother HenryHaworth, with a team and wagon. There was a cold March wind blowing, andthe children rode in the wagon bed on straw, covered with quilts to keepwarm. They were taken to Henry's homestead to visit until John could geta house built on his newly acquired 160 acre homestead. When finished, the house was 16 x 24 feet, and had 2 rooms: one used as a bedroom andthe other as a kitchen and living room. This homestead was about 5 1/2miles Southeast of Lou and Cora Roberts.
The land was covered with sagebrush, which they used fro firewood, butwhich had to be cleared for farming. There was no well on the place, sothey hauled water in barrels from a spring in Dead Canyon about 3 1/2miles from the house. Nettie walked to the Lone Star School was about 41/2 miles from home. She and Dee Roberts were in school together there.
In the fall of 1911, John and Emidy moved to Mabton, WA., so that Thomascould go to school there. John worked on farms, irrigating, stacking hay,or in the wheat harvests South of Mabton, also traveling to the WallaWalla for wheat harvest, until his death in 1917.
