of Col. William Randolph of Turkey Island). Isham Randolph commanded avessel sailing between Viriginia and England so he often spent time inthe mother country. It was at Bishopsgate Church, Shadwell parish,London on July 25,1717 that he married Jane Rogers. On February 9,1720 inShadwell parish, London, Jane was born to Isham and Jane Rogers Randolph.So it was to honor the birthplace of his wife that Peter named theestate, on which he made his home, Shadwell. In June 1776, Congress chose five men to write America's declaration ofreasons for fighting against England: Thomas Jefferson, BenjaminFranklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. Adams saidJefferson was the man to do the writing, as he had "a happy talent" withthe pen. The declaration had to be clear, yet beautiful; simple, yet wise.
So in his second-floor sitting room, Tom sharpened a new quill and beganto write the paper that would explain to the whole world why England'sAmerican colonies were fighting to become a free states. He needed everybit of his knowledge he had gained in his thirty-three years, he needed agood desk, and he needed a lot of paper. Tom wrote and rewrote forseventeen days until he thought every word was perfect as "an expressionof the American mind."
"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal;that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights;that among these are life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness...."
When the whole declaration was finished, Jefferson gave it to Adams andFranklin to read. They were pleased with its elegance and made only a fewchanges. But when the declaration was shown to the entire Congress onJune 28th, the idea that people make a government and that a king'speople could decide they no longer wished to be ruled by him was stilltoo shocking for some of the men. "This is treason!" they cried. Somebelieved it was a terrible mistake to leave the safety of English rule,to "burn down our house in mid-winter and have no other house to shelterus."
Some of what Thomas Jefferson wrote was taken out, such as a longargument against the slave trade (some states would not have agreed) andthe beautiful phrase of regret to the king "we might have been a free anda great people together...." But on July 2nd, Congress approved theDeclaration of Independence.
