Parents: Henry HURST and Mary BILL. John HURST was born in 1732 in Jamestown, Shenandoah Co. Virginia. He died on 15 May 1825 at the age of 93 in Harrison Co. Indana. The sixth child of Captain John may have actually been Lydia's niece since the following data was found in the Order Book: ORDER BOOK 1781 - 1784 John Hurst was known as "Capt. John". The records show that he took an oath as "Lieutenant of Malitia" in 1778 and was later promoted to Captain. He was married first to Lydia Smith, by whom he had ten children. After her death he was again married to Mary Lindsay, a widow, who had six children by a former marriage. Two of her children married two of Capt. John and Lydia Smith's children. See the following William Lindsey family. On August 29, 1782, Capt. John sold to Daniel Hackney 148 acres of land in Shenandoah County for 100 pounds and moved to Wythe County, Virginia. This was land he had inherited from his father and was a portion of the old home farm and was described as being "on the South side of the South branch of the Shenandoah River." Soon after selling this tract of land the records show that Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia, conveyed to John Hurst, assignee of John Newell, 260 acres of land in Montgomery County, Virginia (now Wythe County), on both sides of the New river and adjoining "Persimmon Bottom." On this or adjoining land he made his home during his residence in Wythe County. He later bought a number of other adjacent tracts. He sold land there in 1794, 1795 and 1797. In the meantime he moved to Greene County, Tennessee. The exact date of his going there is not known; but the records show that on November 13, 1797, he purchased from John Ellison, 300 acres of land for the sum of $1500.00 cash. It was located on the North side of the Nolichucky river and here is where he afterwards made his home while living in that county. Most of his children probably went to Greene County with him as the records show that some of them purchased property there and at least four of them were married there. According to some reports, he left Tennessee about the year 1803 and moved to Kentucky where he settled on Bear Grass Creek near Louisville, where he remained less than a year. He then moved across the Ohio River and settled in Harrison County, Indiana, about 20 miles West of New Albany, where he lived until his death in 1825. His Will in on record there. He is buried about 5 miles North of Corydon, Indiana. Most if not all his children eventually followed him to Indiana, where many of his descendants may yet be found. His son John probably left Tennessee before his father and settled near Crab Orchard, Kentucky, where he lived for about 2 years. He then went to Washington County, Kentucky where he remained until 1806 when The following is taken from the scrap book of B. F. Hurst: Following story is reserved in the traditions of the Hurst family as given me by Boliver Hurst, son of William Hurst (Greene Co., Tenn. b 11/29/1798) and grandson of Elijah (b Shenandoah Co. Va, in 1774 and Great-great grandson of John Hurst (1732-1825). On arriving in Bedford Co., Virginia, John made his first stop some 30 miles (two days) from where the widow Lindsey lived and when he had fairly settled, he made ample preparations to go courting, by taking two ox teams and wagons; two of his boys, and feed and lunch for the two day journey, they were ready to camp at the widows the second night. It so happened at this early day that mails were so slow and uncertain that questions of such importance could be more quickly settled by having both parties present when the question was opened for discussion. On arrival at the widows, Accomodations were rather meager, but the teams were tied to the wagon, and supper prepared. You can now vision the old man, past three score, bald and gray, setting at one end of the table, while Mary Lindsey, widow, (who was to outlive him nine years) setting at the opposite end, with two boys and three girls between. "I have come to marry you and take you back with me", said John Hurst to the widow, the first notice he had given her of the purpose of making the journey over The following story was written by Mrs. Victor McIntosh: JACKSON TOWNSHIP HISTORY Early settlers arrived in what is now known as Jackson Township, shortly after 1800. Big Indian Creek with tributaries fed by springs of excellent quality flows southwesterly through the eastern part of this township. Fertile soil, heavily timbered land, both sloping and bottom land, offered much of the pioneers needs. The Hursts were the first to arrive and settled at Hursttown on Big Indian Creek and soon erected a sawmill and gristmill. Mr Hurst and family came from Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. John Hurst was born 1732 and died in 1825 in Harrison County, Indiana. He was married in Virginia to Lydia Smith and they had ten children. She died, he married Mary Lindsey, a widow with 10 children. John and Mary had a son making a family of 21 children. John's family of Hurst children, six boys and five girls, came with him with the exception of John who stopped in Tennessee and came two years later with his wife. Two of the stepchildren or more came. It is easy to see that when the family married and lived on farms near to each other a settlement would be started. John gave land for a school house, church, store and a cemetery. This settlement is in the area where highway 135 and the Crandall road 335 junction at Hursttown. The mill and sawmill were on the bank of the Big Indian Creek. Other families came and settled near them and Hursttown became a community center with a postoffice, shoeshop and blacksmith's shop. John served as sheriff of Harrison County 1812 to 1816. John Jr's son Nimrod Hurst, married Dennis Pennington's daughter Mary (Polly). Another grandson drowned in the load of books and papers being brought from Vincennes to Corydon State House. John Hurst's home in Shenandoah County, Virginia was about 50 miles west of George Washington's birthplace and they had the same birthyear. His father William Hurst gave John 400 acres in the Shenandoah Valley and the will was attested by John Hancock (probated in 1781). John and his sons came well equipped to settle. Several teams of oxen and wagons and horses must have brought skilled men and some tools for the operations required to make a home, mill and etc. Two of John's family married a stepsister and stepbrother. John Hurst deeded land for a Methodist Church called "Whitten Chapel" which stood where William and Fred Elwangers barn stands and a school house beside it. Whitten Chapel was the first church built in Jackson Township. The Hurst mill and sawmill were run for many years by Hurst descendants. The Hurst-Stepro lumber company was built by Ben Hurst who was descended from William Hurst's grandson, John. Mrs. Cecil Miles, daughter of Ben and Edna Hurst. Bill and Charles Dome were some of the descendants who through research and patience have the genealogy and facts on the Hurst families. John Hurst was born in 1732 in Virginia and died in 1825 in Indiana. He entered Indiana Territory and Indiana became a state in 1816. I don't know why the deeds for Hurst's land aren't in Harrison Count courthouse. But he probably entered the land through a Federal Agency. A grandson Jonas drowned with some of the Territorial Records. The Hursts had a part in the building Spouse: Lydia SMITH. Lydia SMITH and John HURST were married in 1760 in ,Shenandoah,Virginia.
